Vocabulary
उर्दू शब्द भंडार — पर्याय, विलोम, अनेक शब्दों के लिए एक शब्द, वर्तनी
Synonyms — مترادف الفاظ
Urdu draws on three stores of words — the Hindi–Prakrit base, Persian, and Arabic — so one idea often has three or more words. Seeing the source makes synonyms easy to remember:
| Meaning | Hindi base | Persian | Arabic |
|---|---|---|---|
| water | پانی | آب | ماء |
| fire | آگ | آتش | نار |
| night | رات | شب | لیل |
| day | دن | روز | یوم |
| earth | دھرتی | زمین | ارض |
Synonyms asked most often
| Word | Synonyms |
|---|---|
How the question comes — a word is given and four options follow; three are synonyms and one is not, or one is a synonym and three are look-alikes. Sound alone is a poor guide: قمر (moon) and قمیص (shirt) share their opening letters but nothing else.
The trap: فلک is the sky and ملک is a country — only the first letter differs; read every letter before choosing.

Antonyms — متضاد الفاظ
Pairs that stand on their own
| Word | Antonym |
|---|---|
| عروج (rise) | زوال (decline) |
| آغاز (beginning) | انجام (end) |
| امیر (rich) | غریب (poor) |
| عزت (honour) | ذلت (disgrace) |
| قدیم (old) | جدید (new) |
| ظاہر (outward) | باطن (inward) |
| حاضر (present) | غائب (absent) |
| نیکی (virtue) | بدی (vice) |
| آزادی (freedom) | غلامی (slavery) |
| فائدہ (gain) | نقصان (loss) |
| اتفاق (agreement) | اختلاف (disagreement) |
| مثبت (positive) | منفی (negative) |
Antonyms made with a prefix — five prefixes turn a word into its opposite:
| Prefix | Example |
|---|---|
| نا | ممکن → ناممکن، کامیاب → ناکام |
| بے | ادب → بے ادب، وفا → بے وفا |
| لا | علم → لاعلم، پروا → لاپروا |
| غیر | حاضر → غیر حاضر، ضروری → غیر ضروری |
| بد | نصیب → بدنصیب، نام → بدنام |
A prefixed opposite is not always the only one: حاضر has both غائب and غیر حاضر.
The trap: an antonym question gives a near-synonym among the options — for عروج the options may include ترقی and بلندی, which mean much the same as the word itself.
उर्दू शब्द भंडार — पर्याय, विलोम, अनेक शब्दों के लिए एक शब्द, वर्तनी
One word for many — کئی لفظوں کے بدلے ایک لفظ
| Phrase | One word |
|---|---|
| one who never dies — جو کبھی نہ مرے | لافانی |
| one who has no equal — جس کا کوئی ثانی نہ ہو | لاثانی، بے مثال |
| one who cannot read or write — جو پڑھنا لکھنا نہ جانے | ناخواندہ، ان پڑھ |
| that which cannot be cured — جس کا علاج نہ ہو سکے | لاعلاج |
| one who forgets a kindness — جو احسان نہ مانے | احسان فراموش |
| one who acknowledges a kindness — جو احسان مانے | احسان مند، شکر گزار |
| one who wishes others well — جو دوسروں کا بھلا چاہے | خیر خواہ |
| a child without parents — جس کے ماں باپ نہ ہوں | یتیم |
| seen with one's own eyes — اپنی آنکھوں سے دیکھا ہوا | چشم دید |
| happening every year — ہر سال ہونے والا | سالانہ |
| one who eats no meat — جو گوشت نہ کھائے | سبزی خور |
| one who writes short stories — جو افسانے لکھے | افسانہ نگار |
| without limit — جس کی کوئی حد نہ ہو | لامحدود، بے حد |
| one who leaves home to settle in another land — جو وطن چھوڑ کر بسے | مہاجر، تارکِ وطن |
Notice the prefixes doing the work — لا (no) in لافانی، لاثانی، لاعلاج، لامحدود; نا in ناخواندہ; and the suffixes خور (eater), نگار (writer), مند (possessing), انہ (by the year).
The trap: لاعلاج (incurable) and لاجواب (unanswerable, matchless) share the prefix — the second half decides the meaning.

Homophones and spelling — ہم آواز الفاظ اور املا
Why Urdu spelling is hard — several letters carry one sound, kept from Arabic, where they were different:
| Sound | Letters |
|---|---|
| z | ز، ذ، ض، ظ |
| s | س، ص، ث |
| t | ت، ط |
| h | ح، ہ |
Words that sound alike but differ in meaning
| Word | Meaning | Word | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| سورت | a chapter of the Quran | صورت | face, form |
| سدا | always | صدا | voice, call |
| حال | condition | ہال | a hall |
| عام | common | آم | mango |
| ارض | the earth | عرض | request; width |
| نذیر | one who warns | نظیر | an example |
| ثواب | reward for good deeds | صواب | what is right |
Common spelling errors
| Wrong | Right |
|---|---|
| زمہ داری | ذمہ داری |
| سہی (meaning correct) | صحیح |
| اطمنان | اطمینان |
| زرورت | ضرورت |
| مزمون | مضمون |
| امتہان | امتحان |
| حفاضت | حفاظت |
The safest method is to learn the root: صحیح belongs with صحت (health, soundness), so it takes ص and ح; ذمہ belongs with ذمہ دار, never with زمین.
The trap: سہی is a real word — it means 'even so, at least' (کم سے کم یہی سہی) — but it is not the spelling of صحیح (correct).
