Business, profession and employment
Human activities are economic (done to earn a living) or non-economic (done out of love, duty or faith — a mother cooking for her family). Economic activities are of three kinds:
| Basis | Business | Profession | Employment |
|---|---|---|---|
| how it begins | an entrepreneur's decision and legal formalities | membership of a professional body |
| an appointment letter and a service agreement |
| nature of work | goods and services for sale | personalised expert service | work as laid down in the contract |
| qualification | none required by law | specialised knowledge and training | as the employer requires |
| reward | profit | fee | salary or wages |
| capital | according to size and nature | limited, for an office and equipment | none |
| risk | profit uncertain, high risk | fee regular, little risk | fixed pay, no risk |
| transfer of interest | possible, with some formalities | not possible | not possible |
| code of conduct | none prescribed | professional code must be followed | the employer's rules |
Characteristics of business — it deals in goods and services; involves sale or exchange for value; is carried on regularly (a single sale of one's old car is not business); aims at profit; and faces uncertainty of returns and risk.
The trap: a doctor in private practice, a lawyer and a chartered accountant are in a profession — they earn fees and are bound by the code of their professional body, even though they also earn money.
Industry and commerce — the parts of business
Industry — producing or processing goods
| Kind | Meaning | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| primary — extractive | taking products from natural sources | mining, fishing, lumbering, hunting |
| primary — genetic | rearing plants and animals for further reproduction | cattle breeding, poultry, plant nurseries, fish hatcheries |
| secondary — manufacturing | turning raw materials into finished goods | analytical (crude oil into petrol, kerosene) · synthetical (ingredients into cement) · processing (sugar, paper) · assembling (cars, computers) |
| secondary — construction | building | roads, bridges, dams, houses |
| tertiary — services | supporting the other two | transport, banking, insurance, warehousing |
Commerce = trade + auxiliaries to trade. Trade is buying and selling — internal (wholesale and retail) or external (import, export, entrepôt). The auxiliaries remove the hindrances that stand between producer and consumer:
| Hindrance | Removed by |
|---|---|
| of persons — producer and consumer do not meet | trade |
| of place — goods made in one place, wanted elsewhere | transport |
| of time — goods made now, wanted later | warehousing |
| of risk — fire, theft, damage | insurance |
| of finance — need for funds | banking |
| of information — buyers unaware of goods | advertising |
The trap: genetic industries rear living things for further reproduction; extractive industries take out what nature has already produced — a fish hatchery is genetic, fishing is extractive.
Objectives and risks of business
Profit is necessary but not enough. Profit is the reward for taking risk and the source of growth, but a business that pursues only profit soon loses customers, workers and goodwill. Peter Drucker argued that objectives must be set in eight key areas:
Business risk — the possibility of loss or inadequate profit because of uncertain events.
| Feature | Meaning |
|---|---|
| arises from uncertainty | changes in demand, prices, technology, policy |
| cannot be eliminated | it can only be reduced or shared — through insurance, research, diversification |
| varies with nature and size | a toy-maker faces more fashion risk than a salt-maker |
| profit is its reward | no risk, no profit |
Causes of risk
| Cause | Examples |
|---|---|
| natural | flood, earthquake, drought, lightning |
| human | theft, strikes, dishonesty of employees, a customer failing to pay |
| economic | a fall in demand, price changes, competition, new technology |
| other | political upheaval, a change in government policy, a machine breaking down |
Starting a business — choose the line of business and its size, the form of ownership, the location, the sources of finance, the physical facilities, the layout, a competent team, tax planning — and then launch.
The trap: business risk can be reduced but not eliminated; and Drucker's list puts social responsibility alongside profit, not after it.
Trade in India's past — and the duties of business today
A long commercial history — the Indus cities traded with Mesopotamia; under the Mauryas, Pataliputra stood on the great northern route, the Uttarapatha, that ran from the Gangetic plain to the north-west, and the port of Tamralipti carried goods to south-east Asia. Merchants used the hundi, a written order to pay, and the chitti, as instruments of credit; guilds of merchants and artisans, the shrenis, regulated trade. In the 18th century the Jagat Seths of Murshidabad were bankers to the Nawabs of Bengal.
Social responsibility — a business owes duties beyond its owners
| Towards | Duty |
|---|---|
| owners | a fair return, and safety of their investment |
| workers | fair wages, safe conditions, dignity |
| consumers | quality goods, fair prices, honest advertising |
| government and community | taxes paid, laws obeyed, the environment protected |
CSR made law — India was the first country to make corporate social responsibility spending compulsory. Under Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, in force from 1 April 2014, a company with a net worth of ₹500 crore, or a turnover of ₹1,000 crore, or a net profit of ₹5 crore or more must spend at least 2% of its average net profit of the preceding three years on activities listed in Schedule VII — education, health, sanitation, the environment, rural development.
Business ethics — moral standards in business: honesty with customers, fairness to workers, no bribery; they begin with commitment at the top and must reach every employee.
The trap: the CSR rule is 2% of the average net profit of three years, not 2% of turnover, and it applies only above the thresholds.
