How the Earth came to be
The universe — the Big Bang theory holds that the universe began about 13.7 billion years ago from a single point of immense density and has been expanding ever since; Edwin Hubble showed in the 1920s that galaxies are moving apart.
The solar system — older ideas explained the planets' origin from the Sun: the nebular hypothesis of Immanuel Kant, revised by Laplace (1796), proposed a slowly rotating cloud of gas; Chamberlain and Moulton suggested a passing star pulled material out of the Sun. The modern view keeps the core of the nebular idea — the Sun and planets formed together, about 4.6 billion years ago, from a cloud of gas and dust.
The evolution of the Earth
The geological time scale — Earth history is divided into eons, eras, periods and epochs: the Palaeozoic (ancient life), Mesozoic (the age of reptiles and dinosaurs) and Cenozoic (the age of mammals, in which humans appeared).
The trap: the universe is about 13.7 billion years old; the Earth only about 4.6 billion — options often swap the two.
The interior of the Earth
How we know — direct sources are few: mines and drilling (the deepest borehole, Kola in Russia, reached about 12 km) and lava from volcanoes. Most knowledge is indirect — from seismic waves, meteorites, gravity and magnetic surveys, and the rise of temperature and pressure with depth.
The layers
| Layer | Depth | Features |
|---|---|---|
| crust | about 30 km under continents, up to 70 km under the Himalaya; about 5 km under oceans | brittle; continental crust of lighter rocks rich in silica and aluminium (SIAL), oceanic crust of denser silica and magnesium (SIMA) |
| mantle | from the crust to about 2,900 km | its upper part, the asthenosphere (up to about 400 km), is weak and partly molten — the main source of magma; crust plus uppermost mantle form the rigid lithosphere |
| core | from 2,900 km to the centre, about 6,371 km | outer core liquid, inner core solid; made mainly of nickel and iron (NIFE) |
Discontinuities — the Mohorovičić (Moho) discontinuity separates the crust from the mantle; the Gutenberg discontinuity separates the mantle from the core.
Temperature and density — both rise with depth; the density of the whole Earth (about 5.5 g/cm³) is far higher than that of surface rocks (about 2.7), which shows that heavier material lies deep inside.
The trap: Moho is crust–mantle; Gutenberg is mantle–core — and the outer core is liquid while the inner core is solid, because the pressure there is enormous.
Earthquakes and what their waves reveal
An earthquake is the shaking of the Earth when energy stored in rocks is suddenly released along a fault. Energy is released underground at the focus (hypocentre); the epicentre is the spot on the surface vertically over it.
Seismic waves
| Wave | Motion | Travels through | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| P (primary) | push–pull, like sound | solids, liquids and gases | fastest; arrive first |
| S (secondary) | side to side, at right angles to the direction of travel | solids only | arrive second |
| surface waves | along the surface | the crust | arrive last; the most destructive |
Shadow zones — S-waves are not recorded beyond about 105° from the epicentre, because they cannot pass through the liquid outer core; P-waves are missing between about 105° and 145°, because they bend on entering the core. These shadow zones are the main evidence that the outer core is liquid.
Measuring earthquakes — magnitude (energy released) on the Richter scale; intensity (damage done) on the Mercalli scale. Each whole number on the Richter scale is about ten times the ground motion and about 32 times the energy of the one below.
Bihar and earthquakes — the Bihar–Nepal earthquake of 15 January 1934, of magnitude about 8, devastated Munger, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi and Motihari. The state lies in seismic zones III, IV and V; the districts along the Nepal border are the most vulnerable. Building to earthquake-resistant codes, and drills in schools, save lives.
The trap: the S-wave shadow zone proves the outer core is liquid — S-waves cannot travel through liquids.
Drifting continents and moving plates
Continental drift — in 1912 Alfred Wegener proposed that all continents were once joined in a supercontinent, Pangaea, surrounded by an ocean, Panthalassa, which began breaking up about 200 million years ago.
Evidence — the jig-saw fit of South America and Africa; matching rocks and mountain belts across oceans; the same fossils on now-separate continents (the reptile Mesosaurus in Brazil and South Africa, the fern Glossopteris across India and the southern continents); ancient glacial deposits (tillite) in now-tropical lands; placer gold in Ghana with no source rock nearby but with its source in Brazil.
Wegener could not explain the force that moved the continents, and his idea was set aside for decades.
Sea-floor spreading — Harry Hess (1961) showed that new oceanic crust forms at mid-ocean ridges and spreads outwards; rocks are youngest at the ridges and older farther away, and the ocean floor is nowhere older than about 200 million years.
Plate tectonics (late 1960s) — the lithosphere is broken into seven major plates and many minor ones, moving a few centimetres a year over the asthenosphere, driven by convection currents in the mantle (an idea proposed by Arthur Holmes in the 1930s).
| Boundary | Plates | Result |
|---|---|---|
| divergent | move apart | new crust — the Mid-Atlantic Ridge |
| convergent | collide | trenches, volcanoes, fold mountains — the Himalaya, as the Indian plate pushes north |
| transform | slide past | earthquakes — the San Andreas fault |
Volcanoes — shield (Hawaii), composite, caldera, and flood basalt (the Deccan Traps). India's only active volcano is on Barren Island in the Andaman Sea.
The trap: Wegener proposed drift but no convincing mechanism; the mechanism came later, from mantle convection and sea-floor spreading.
