Why This One Year Carries So Many Marks
1857 is the hinge of modern Indian history. Before it, India was governed by a trading company; after it, by the British Crown directly. Almost every institution that later nationalists argued with was designed in the decade that followed.
The naming argument is itself an exam favourite:
You are not asked to settle the argument. You are asked to attach the right label to the right person, which is a memory task and worth an easy mark.
The events themselves run over roughly eighteen months, from March 1857 to the Proclamation of November 1858.
Five Heads of Causes
Political. Lord Dalhousie's Doctrine of Lapse annexed Satara (1848), Jhansi (1853) and Nagpur (1854) whenever a ruler died without a natural heir. Awadh was annexed in 1856 on the charge of misgovernment — and a very large share of the Bengal Army's sepoys came from Awadh, so an administrative decision landed directly in the barracks.
Economic. Heavy land revenue demands, the ruin of village artisans as machine-made cloth arrived, and the collapse of court patronage after annexations left nobles, weavers and peasants aggrieved at once.
Social and religious. The abolition of sati and the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act (1856), however reformist, were read as interference; missionary activity deepened the suspicion.
Military. Indians could rise no higher than subedar; the General Service Enlistment Act (1856) required service overseas, which meant loss of caste for many.
Immediate. The greased cartridge of the new Enfield rifle, rumoured to be smeared with cow and pig fat and required to be bitten open.
The Course — Four Dates That Carry the Story
29 March 1857, Barrackpore. Mangal Pandey of the 34th Native Infantry attacked his officers and was hanged on 8 April. This is the first flashpoint, not the start of the revolt itself — a distinction examiners test constantly.
10 May 1857, Meerut. Sepoys jailed for refusing the cartridges were freed by their comrades, and the garrison marched on Delhi overnight. This is the date of the outbreak.
11–12 May 1857, Delhi. The rebels proclaimed the aged Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah II (Zafar) as Emperor of Hindustan, giving the rising a symbolic centre it could not otherwise have had. Delhi fell to the British in September 1857; Zafar was exiled to Rangoon, where he died in 1862.
Why it failed. No common plan or unified command; a limited geography (the Doab, Awadh, Rohilkhand, and pockets further east) while Punjab, Bengal and most of the south stayed quiet; the telegraph and the railway moved British troops faster than news moved between rebel centres; and several rulers and regiments sided with the Company.
Centres, Leaders, and Who Crushed Them
This table is the single most examined item in the chapter.
What changed. The Government of India Act 1858 abolished the East India Company and transferred power to the Crown, creating the Secretary of State for India. Queen Victoria's Proclamation, read at Allahabad on 1 November 1858 by Lord Canning, promised no further annexation and respect for religion. The army was reorganised to raise the European-to-Indian ratio, and artillery was kept in British hands.
What Exams Actually Ask
SSC CGL, CHSL and MTS ask single-fact recall: who led at which centre, which Act ended Company rule, who was hanged at Barrackpore. The standard trap is the pair 29 March / 10 May — Mangal Pandey's action is offered as the start of the revolt, and it is not.
RRB NTPC and Group D prefer matching sets: leader to centre, or rebel leader to the British officer who defeated them. Hugh Rose and Colin Campbell are swapped in the options almost every time.
UPSC Prelims goes one layer deeper — the historiography (who called it what), the terms of the 1858 Proclamation, and which regions and social groups stayed loyal rather than which revolted.
BPSC TRE-4 General Studies keeps to the mainstream facts: causes under the five heads, principal centres, and the 1858 transfer of power.
CTET and state TET papers frame the same content as a classroom exercise — a timeline to arrange, or a source extract to place in order — but the facts tested are identical.
Points to Remember
⚠ Exam Tip 1: Keep the two March/May dates apart in your head. Barrackpore was an incident by one soldier; Meerut was the outbreak. Options routinely offer 29 March 1857 as the start of the revolt, and it is the most common single error in this chapter.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: Learn the suppressors alongside the leaders. Half the marks here come from "who defeated whom", and Rose-at-Jhansi versus Campbell-at-Lucknow is the pair examiners swap most often.
⚠ Exam Tip 2:
Between 1815 and 1903 a set of Indians looked at their own society and decided parts of it had to change. They founded organisations, started newspapers, opened schools for girls, and pushed a colonial government into passing laws it had no wish to pass. That whole century is one chapter in every paper, and it is asked as a matching exercise: a name, a body, a year, a book.
It is worth treating as a case study rather than a list, because the movements answer each other. Ram Mohan Roy wanted reason inside Hinduism; Dayanand wanted a return to the Vedas; Phule and Narayana Guru said reform from the top would never reach the bottom and organised outside it; Sir Syed argued that the community he led needed modern education before politics.
The exam traps come from pairs that sit close together — teacher and disciple, founder and famous successor, two societies begun in the same year. Learn the pairs and the chapter stops being a memory test.
Bengal moved first. Raja Ram Mohan Roy began with the Atmiya Sabha in 1815 and founded the Brahmo Sabha in 1828, which grew into the Brahmo Samaj. He edited Sambad Kaumudi in Bengali and Mirat-ul-Akbar in Persian, campaigned against sati, idolatry and caste rigidity, and pressed Lord William Bentinck until sati was abolished by regulation in 1829. The title 'Raja' was conferred on him by the Mughal emperor Akbar II; he died at Bristol in England in 1833 and is remembered as the father of the Indian Renaissance.
After him, Debendranath Tagore ran the Tattvabodhini Sabha from 1839 and led the Samaj; Keshab Chandra Sen's more radical wing split away in 1866.
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar took a different route — scholarship and legislation. His work led directly to the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act of 1856, passed under Lord Canning.
Alongside them stood Henry Vivian Derozio's Young Bengal group at Hindu College, brilliant, short-lived, and far ahead of what society would then accept.
The west and south answered in their own idiom.
Prarthana Samaj was founded at Bombay in 1867 by Atmaram Pandurang, and M. G. Ranade became its guiding figure — reform from within, and quietly.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj at Bombay in 1875. His book Satyarth Prakash carried the slogan 'Back to the Vedas'; he rejected idol worship and hereditary caste, began the Shuddhi movement to bring converts back, and the DAV school system that grew from his followers opened at Lahore in 1886.
Jyotiba Phule founded the Satyashodhak Samaj at Pune in 1873 and wrote Gulamgiri the same year. He and Savitribai Phule had already opened a school for girls at Pune in 1848, at a time when almost nobody would.
In Kerala, Narayana Guru founded the SNDP Yogam in 1903 with the line 'one caste, one religion, one God for man'.
Also in 1875, Madame Blavatsky and Colonel Olcott founded the Theosophical Society in New York; its headquarters moved to Adyar near Madras in 1882, and Annie Besant later led it.
Two more strands, and then the laws.
Ramakrishna Paramhansa taught; his disciple Swami Vivekananda organised. Vivekananda spoke at the Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893 and founded the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897, with Belur Math as its centre from 1899 and Prabuddha Bharata and Udbodhan as its journals. Teacher and disciple are the single most swapped pair in this chapter.
Sir Syed Ahmad Khan led the Aligarh Movement, arguing that modern education had to come before political agitation. He started the Scientific Society in 1864, the journal Tahzib-ul-Akhlaq in 1870, and the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh in 1875, which became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920.
The laws are the movement's measurable result, and they come in a fixed order: sati abolished in 1829 under Lord William Bentinck; the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act in 1856 under Lord Canning; the Age of Consent Act in 1891, driven by B. M. Malabari's campaign; and the Sharda Act — the Child Marriage Restraint Act — in 1929, moved by Har Bilas Sarda.
What exams actually ask
SSC CGL and CHSL set the founder-and-body match: who founded the Arya Samaj, who wrote Satyarth Prakash, who founded the Ramakrishna Mission. The commonest trap is Ramakrishna Paramhansa for the Mission — the Mission carries the teacher's name but was founded by the disciple, Vivekananda, in 1897.
Railway NTPC and Group D prefer the years and the laws, usually as chronology: arrange sati abolition, widow remarriage, age of consent and the Sharda Act in order. Learn 1829, 1856, 1891, 1929 as one string and the ordering question disappears.
BPSC TRE-4 general awareness likes the Governor-General attached to each law — Bentinck with sati, Canning with widow remarriage. The two get swapped in one question a paper.
CTET and state TET papers put it in the classroom, usually around Savitribai Phule and the 1848 girls' school at Pune, or Vidyasagar's work for widows. Names and years are still what is being marked.
Points to Remember
• Raja Ram Mohan Roy — Atmiya Sabha 1815, Brahmo Sabha 1828; Sambad Kaumudi and Mirat-ul-Akbar; title 'Raja' from Akbar II; died Bristol 1833.
• Debendranath Tagore — Tattvabodhini Sabha 1839. Keshab Chandra Sen split away in 1866.
• Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar — Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act 1856. Derozio — Young Bengal.
• Prarthana Samaj 1867, Bombay — Atmaram Pandurang; M. G. Ranade its leading figure.
• Arya Samaj 1875, Bombay — Dayanand Saraswati; Satyarth Prakash; 'Back to the Vedas'; Shuddhi; DAV Lahore 1886.
• Satyashodhak Samaj 1873, Pune — Jyotiba Phule; Gulamgiri; girls' school at Pune 1848.
• Ramakrishna Mission 1897 — Swami Vivekananda; Chicago address 1893; Belur Math 1899.
• Theosophical Society 1875, New York — Blavatsky and Olcott; Adyar headquarters 1882.
• Aligarh Movement — Sir Syed Ahmad Khan; Tahzib-ul-Akhlaq 1870; MAO College 1875 → AMU 1920.
• SNDP Yogam 1903, Kerala — Narayana Guru.
• Laws: Sati 1829 (Bentinck) · Widow Remarriage 1856 (Canning) · Age of Consent 1891 · Sharda Act 1929.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: When an organisation is named after somebody, check who actually founded it. The Ramakrishna Mission was founded by Vivekananda, not Ramakrishna — that single reflex saves a mark almost every year.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: 1875 is a double year — Arya Samaj at Bombay and the Theosophical Society at New York. If the question offers 1875 and you are unsure which body it means, read the city in the stem; the year alone cannot separate them.
The list of Governors-General and Viceroys is the most reliably asked matching set in Indian history, and the reason is simple: every major British-era reform, war, act and famine is attached to a name, so one memorised list answers questions drawn from four different chapters. The trouble is that students learn thirty names in order and remember none of them.
Learn the four titles first, because the paper tests those more often than the people. Warren Hastings was the first Governor-General of Bengal, from 1774. William Bentinck became the first Governor-General of India in 1833. Canning was the last Governor-General and the first Viceroy, from 1858. Mountbatten was the last Viceroy, and C. Rajagopalachari the last Governor-General of independent India. Those five sentences are worth more marks than the entire middle of the list.
The Company era, 1773 to 1856.
Warren Hastings (1774–85): the Regulating Act of 1773 created his post; the Asiatic Society of Bengal was founded in 1784.
Cornwallis (1786–93): the Permanent Settlement of 1793 and the Cornwallis Code; he is called the father of the Indian civil service.
Wellesley (1798–1805): the Subsidiary Alliance, first accepted by Hyderabad in 1798; Fort William College; Tipu Sultan killed at Seringapatam in 1799.
William Bentinck (1828–35): abolition of sati in 1829, the suppression of thuggee, and English made the medium of instruction after Macaulay's Minute of 1835.
Dalhousie (1848–56): the Doctrine of Lapse, the first railway from Bombay to Thane in 1853, the telegraph, Wood's Despatch of 1854 and the annexation of Awadh in 1856.
Notice the pattern the examiner uses: reform-minded names cluster in the 1830s, annexation-minded names in the 1840s and 1850s.

What exams actually ask. SSC CGL, CHSL and MTS ask this as a straight matching pair — "the Vernacular Press Act was passed during whose tenure?" — and the wrong option is almost always the man who repealed it. Lytton passed it in 1878; Ripon repealed it in 1882, and the paper counts on you remembering only that the two names belong together.
BPSC TRE-4 and other state exams prefer the firsts and lasts: first Governor-General of Bengal, first Governor-General of India, first Viceroy, last Viceroy. Railway NTPC likes the dated events — the 1853 railway, the 1872 census, the 1905 partition. UPSC prelims rarely asks the name directly and instead gives a statement set in which the act is right but the tenure has been shifted by one Viceroy. CTET and the state TETs keep it classroom-framed as a timeline-ordering exercise.
The commonest trap of all: confusing Bentinck's abolition of sati in 1829 with the Widow Remarriage Act of 1856, which belongs to Canning's first year in office.
Points to Remember
• First Governor-General of Bengal — Warren Hastings, 1774. First Governor-General of India — William Bentinck, 1833. First Viceroy — Canning, 1858. Last Viceroy — Mountbatten. Last Governor-General of independent India — C. Rajagopalachari.
• Permanent Settlement 1793 — Cornwallis. Subsidiary Alliance — Wellesley. Sati abolished 1829 — Bentinck. Doctrine of Lapse and the first railway 1853 — Dalhousie.
• First census 1872 — Mayo, the only Viceroy assassinated in office.
• Vernacular Press Act 1878 — Lytton; repealed 1882 — Ripon. Local Self-Government Resolution 1882 — Ripon.
• Congress founded 1885 — Dufferin. Partition of Bengal 1905 — Curzon; annulled 1911 — Hardinge II.
• Separate electorates 1909 — Minto II. Jallianwala Bagh 1919 — Chelmsford. Simon Commission 1928 and Dandi March 1930 — Irwin. Government of India Act 1935 — Willingdon. Quit India 1942 — Linlithgow. Cabinet Mission 1946 — Wavell.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: For any act, ask who passed it and who undid it — the paper usually offers both names. Lytton and Ripon on the press, Curzon and Hardinge on Bengal, are the two pairs worth over-learning.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: If the name will not come, place the event in a decade and pick the Viceroy whose tenure covers it. Tenure dates are far easier to hold than achievements, and they eliminate two options instantly.

Between the social reformers and Mahatma Gandhi there are thirty-four years that papers ask about constantly and students skip constantly. They are the years in which Indians learnt to organise politically — and then argued bitterly about what political organisation is for.
The Indian National Congress was founded in 1885 by men who believed British rule could be reasoned with. By 1907 a second generation had concluded it could not, and the two halves broke apart at Surat in a session that ended in flying chairs. They came back together at Lucknow in 1916, and three years later Gandhi took charge of a Congress that had already been built, split and repaired for him.
That arc — founding, moderation, confrontation, split, reunion — is the whole story, and every date below hangs on it. Learn the arc first and the dates stop being loose facts.
The founding, December 1885. Seventy-two delegates met at the Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in Bombay. W.C. Bonnerjee presided. A.O. Hume, a retired British civil servant, was the organising force and served as general secretary for over two decades — which is why he is called the father of the Congress.
That British hand at the founding produced the safety-valve theory: the claim that Hume built the Congress to give Indian discontent a harmless outlet before it exploded. The argument is old and still contested, and papers ask you to name it, not to settle it.
The firsts are asked constantly, so learn them as a block:
• First president — W.C. Bonnerjee, Bombay 1885.
• First Muslim president — Badruddin Tyabji, Madras 1887.
• First European president — George Yule, Allahabad 1888.
• First woman president — Annie Besant, Calcutta 1917.
• First Indian woman president — Sarojini Naidu, Kanpur 1925.
Note the pattern in those dates: the Congress had a Muslim president in its third year and a woman president thirty-two years in.
The Moderate phase, 1885–1905. The leaders were Dadabhai Naoroji, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Surendranath Banerjee, Pherozeshah Mehta, W.C. Bonnerjee, Badruddin Tyabji, M.G. Ranade and Dinshaw Wacha — lawyers and professors who believed British rule was, at bottom, well-intentioned, and that showing it the facts would be enough.
Their method has a name and a nickname. The name is constitutional agitation. The nickname, from their own vocabulary, is the three Ps — prayer, petition and protest: resolutions, memoranda, deputations to London, evidence before commissions.
What it achieved is more than students usually credit. Dadabhai Naoroji's Poverty and Un-British Rule in India, published in 1901, set out the drain of wealth — the argument that India was being systematically impoverished by transfers to Britain — and that single idea removed the moral case for empire more effectively than any protest. Naoroji also won a seat in the British House of Commons in 1892, the first Indian to do so. The Indian Councils Act of 1892 expanded the legislative councils. Gokhale founded the Servants of India Society in 1905 and later became Gandhi's political mentor.
What it did not achieve was any transfer of power, and by 1905 a younger generation was calling the method political mendicancy — begging.
The Extremist phase, 1905–1919, and its trigger. Lord Curzon announced the partition of Bengal in July 1905 and it took effect on 16 October 1905. Officially it was administrative; in practice it divided a politically active province along religious lines. The Swadeshi and Boycott movement was proclaimed at Calcutta Town Hall on 7 August 1905 and turned protest into economic action for the first time.
The new leadership was Lal-Bal-Pal — Lala Lajpat Rai of Punjab, Bal Gangadhar Tilak of Maharashtra, Bipin Chandra Pal of Bengal — with Aurobindo Ghosh alongside them. Tilak ran the newspapers Kesari and Mahratta, revived the Ganapati and Shivaji festivals as mass politics, and gave the phrase: Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it. At the Calcutta session of 1906, presided over by Dadabhai Naoroji, the Congress adopted swaraj as its goal along with swadeshi, boycott and national education.
Then the break. At Surat in December 1907 the two groups could not agree on who would preside. The Moderates installed Rash Behari Ghosh; the Extremists had wanted Lala Lajpat Rai. The session collapsed and the Congress stayed split for nine years.
The repair came at Lucknow in 1916, presided over by Ambica Charan Mazumdar: the two wings reunited, and the Congress and the Muslim League signed the Lucknow Pact in the same city. That same year both Home Rule Leagues began — Tilak's in April and Annie Besant's in September. Bengal's partition had already been annulled in 1911, when the capital also moved from Calcutta to Delhi.
What exams actually ask
BPSC TRE-4 General Studies goes for the founding block and the phase leaders — who presided in 1885, who founded the Servants of India Society, which leaders make up Lal-Bal-Pal. The trap is A.O. Hume: he organised the first session but did not preside over it, and options routinely place his name where Bonnerjee's belongs.
SSC CGL, CHSL and the Railway papers prefer dates and single facts: the year of the Surat split, the year of the Lucknow Pact, the effective date of the partition of Bengal. Their standing trap on the partition is to offer 7 August 1905 — a real and famous date, but the date of the Swadeshi proclamation, not of the partition taking effect.
UPSC asks it as interpretation rather than recall — the moderates' economic critique, the safety-valve theory, why the split happened at all — so understand the argument between the two wings, not only the fact that there was one.
CTET, Bihar STET and UP TET frame the same material as classroom items on the freedom movement, usually the phase leaders and the meaning of swadeshi and boycott.
One error costs marks in every one of these papers: treating 1905, 1906 and 1907 as interchangeable. Partition is 1905, the swaraj resolution is 1906, the split is 1907.
Points to Remember
• 1885 — INC founded, December, Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College, Bombay, 72 delegates. President W.C. Bonnerjee; organiser A.O. Hume.
• Firsts — Muslim president Badruddin Tyabji (1887), European president George Yule (1888), woman president Annie Besant (1917), Indian woman president Sarojini Naidu (1925).
• Moderates 1885–1905 — Naoroji, Gokhale, S.N. Banerjee, Pherozeshah Mehta, Ranade, Wacha. Method: constitutional agitation, the three Ps.

• 1907 Surat split — over the presidency; Rash Behari Ghosh installed, Lala Lajpat Rai wanted by the Extremists.
• Lal-Bal-Pal — Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal. Tilak's papers: Kesari and Mahratta.
• 1911 — partition annulled; capital moves to Delhi.
• 1916 — Lucknow session, president Ambica Charan Mazumdar, reunion; Lucknow Pact with the Muslim League; both Home Rule Leagues founded.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: Never write A.O. Hume as the first president. He founded and organised the Congress and served as its general secretary, but the chair at the 1885 session belonged to W.C. Bonnerjee. This is the single most planted distractor in the whole topic.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: Fix three years as a block — 1905 partition, 1906 swaraj resolution, 1907 Surat split — and check any date option against that block before answering. Most wrong answers in this topic are not wrong facts but right facts moved one year.
Why This Area Has Its Own Half
The syllabus heading is "India's national movement and Bihar's contribution to it". The second half is where the marks are, because national material covers the first half and says almost nothing about the second.
The arc runs:
One state, five moments, and every one of them is a question.
Champaran, 1917 — Why It Carries So Much Weight
This is the single most examinable episode in the whole "Bihar's contribution" half, for one reason: Champaran was Gandhi's first satyagraha in India, and it happened in Bihar.
⚠ What examiners actually ask. They rarely ask what Champaran was. They ask who invited Gandhi, what tinkathia meant, and which Act ended it. Those three facts carry almost every question set on this episode — so if you are short of time, learn those three before anything else here.
The Tinkathia System — Know the Arithmetic
European planters held long leases over Champaran land and compelled the peasants who farmed it to plant indigo on a fixed share of every holding.
That last turn is what made Champaran explosive: the crop had become worthless to the planter, and the peasant was charged for being let go. A grievance about a crop had become a grievance about money extracted for nothing at all.
What Gandhi Did at Champaran, and Who Stood With Him
The Bihar figures who joined him — an exam favourite: Rajendra Prasad (later India's first President), Brajkishore Prasad, Anugrah Narayan Sinha, Ramnavmi Prasad; and from outside Bihar, J.B. Kripalani and Mahadev Desai.
Champaran is where Rajendra Prasad entered the national movement — which is why this chapter matters twice over.
The Leaders — Four Men and Their Firsts
Dr Rajendra Prasad — entered the movement at Champaran; elected President of the Constituent Assembly on 11 December 1946; India's first President; Bharat Ratna in 1962, in his lifetime.
Sachchidananda Sinha — long associated with Bihar's separation from Bengal in 1912; chaired the FIRST sitting of the Constituent Assembly on 9 December 1946 as provisional chairman.
Anugrah Narayan Sinha — "Bihar Vibhuti"; a Champaran veteran; Bihar's first Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister.
Sri Krishna Sinha — Bihar's first Chief Minister; abolished zamindari through the Bihar Land Reforms Act, 1950, the first chief minister in India to do so; also led Dalit entry into the Baidyanath temple at Deoghar.
Jayaprakash Narayan — born 11 October 1902 at Sitabdiara, on the Bihar–UP border; co-founded the Congress Socialist Party in 1934 (Narendra Deva president, J.P. general secretary); escaped from Hazaribagh Central Jail during Quit India, 1942; called Sampoorna Kranti — Total Revolution — at Gandhi Maidan, Patna, on 5 June 1974; "Lok Nayak"; died at Patna on 8 October 1979;
Points to Remember
Before there was a national movement there was a revenue receipt. The East India Company had won Bengal's diwani in 1765 and now had to answer a purely administrative question: from whom does the state collect the land tax, and how much, and how often? The three answers it gave over the next sixty years — Permanent Settlement, Ryotwari, Mahalwari — decided who owned Indian land for the next century and a half.
Treat this as one case study rather than three lists. Each system is a contract, and the whole of it is settled by three questions: who signs, how much is fixed, and can the amount be revised. Answer those three and the map, the dates and the officials attach themselves.
It also explains the rest of the syllabus. The indigo revolt, the Deccan riots, Champaran, the drain theory and the demand for swadeshi all grow out of these contracts. Peasant anger did not arrive from nowhere; it arrived from a receipt.
The Permanent Settlement, also called Istamrari Bandobast, was introduced in 1793 by Lord Cornwallis, on a scheme largely worked out by Sir John Shore. It covered Bengal, Bihar and Odisha and was later extended to parts of Varanasi and the northern Carnatic — roughly a fifth of British territory in India.
The contract had three clauses that matter. The zamindar was recognised as the proprietor of the land, not merely a collector of its revenue. The amount payable to the Company was fixed in perpetuity, at about ten-elevenths of the rental, and would never be revised however the harvest turned out. And the Sunset Clause held that if the fixed sum was not deposited by sunset of the appointed day, the estate would be auctioned the next morning.
The consequences followed logically. Old zamindars who could not pay in a bad year lost estates held for generations, and city merchants bought them at auction. Because rent from tenants was not fixed at all, the pressure ran downhill: absentee landlords, layers of middlemen sub-letting to one another, and a cultivator with no security of tenure at the bottom of it.
The Ryotwari system took the opposite route: the Company signed directly with the ryot, the individual cultivator, cutting the zamindar out altogether. Alexander Read tried it in the Baramahal in 1792 and Thomas Munro built it into a full system in Madras from 1820, after which it spread to Bombay, Assam and Coorg — roughly half of British India. Revenue was set as a share of the estimated produce, and crucially it was revised at intervals of about twenty to thirty years. The cultivator held his land as long as he paid, and lost it the year he could not.
The Mahalwari system, framed by Holt Mackenzie under Regulation VII of 1822 and reworked under Lord William Bentinck in 1833, took the village as the unit. The mahal — a village or estate — was assessed as a whole, and the settlement was made with the village body through its headman, with the villagers jointly responsible for the total. It applied in the North-Western Provinces, Punjab and parts of central India and Awadh, about thirty per cent of the territory.
So: zamindar, cultivator, village. One word each, and the three systems never blur again.
Because revenue had to be paid in cash on a fixed date, the peasant had to sell before he could pay. That single requirement produced the commercialisation of agriculture — indigo, cotton, opium, jute and oilseeds grown for a distant market rather than food grown for the village — and it drove the cultivator to the moneylender at the start of every season.
Alongside it ran deindustrialisation. Duty-free British machine-made cloth entered India while Indian textiles met heavy duties in Britain, and old weaving towns emptied. India increasingly exported raw material and imported finished goods, which is the shape of a colonial economy.
Economic nationalists gave this a name. Dadabhai Naoroji set out the drain of wealth in Poverty and Un-British Rule in India, arguing that a steady one-way transfer through Home Charges, salaries and pensions was bleeding the country; Romesh Chandra Dutt documented it in The Economic History of India.
The peasants answered earlier and more directly: the Indigo revolt of 1859–60 in Bengal, the Pabna agrarian league of 1873, the Deccan riots of 1875 against the moneylenders, and in 1917 Champaran, where Gandhi's first satyagraha broke the tinkathia obligation to grow indigo.
BPSC TRE-4 draws on this for Part II General Studies and again in the social science paper, usually as a one-line matching question. SSC CGL and CHSL ask the official-to-system pairing almost every cycle. UPSC Prelims prefers the consequence — what the Sunset Clause actually did, or why the drain theory mattered politically. Railway NTPC keeps to the year and the name. CTET frames it as a textbook question on colonial rule.
The traps are narrow and repeated. (1) Cornwallis, Munro and Holt Mackenzie are shuffled between the three systems. (2) Ryotwari is described as a settlement with the zamindar, or Mahalwari as one with the individual cultivator. (3) The book is switched: Poverty and Un-British Rule in India is Naoroji, The Economic History of India is R.C. Dutt. (4) 'Permanent' is read as fixed forever for the tenant too — it fixed only the Company's demand, never the rent the peasant paid. (5) The Permanent Settlement is offered as the most widespread system when it covered the smallest share of the three.
When an option names a person, check the system before the date.
Points to Remember. Permanent Settlement 1793 — Lord Cornwallis, drafted by John Shore; Bengal, Bihar and Odisha; settled with the zamindar as proprietor; demand fixed in perpetuity at about ten-elevenths of the rental; the Sunset Clause auctioned defaulting estates; roughly 19 per cent of British India. Ryotwari — Alexander Read in Baramahal 1792, Thomas Munro in Madras from 1820, later Bombay, Assam and Coorg; settled with the individual cultivator; revised every twenty to thirty years; roughly 51 per cent, the largest share. Mahalwari — Holt Mackenzie, Regulation VII of 1822, reworked under Bentinck in 1833; the village or mahal as unit, through the headman, with joint responsibility; North-Western Provinces, Punjab, parts of central India and Awadh; roughly 30 per cent. Drain of wealth — Dadabhai Naoroji, Poverty and Un-British Rule in India; R.C. Dutt, The Economic History of India. Revolts — Indigo 1859–60 Bengal, Nil Darpan by Dinabandhu Mitra; Pabna 1873; Deccan riots 1875; Champaran 1917 against tinkathia.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: Fix one word per system — zamindar, cultivator, village. Every matching question in this chapter is answered by that word alone, and the officials attach to it: Cornwallis to zamindar, Munro to cultivator, Mackenzie to village.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: 'Permanent' fixed what the Company received, not what the peasant paid. Any option claiming the Permanent Settlement protected the tenant from rising rent is wrong — the absence of that protection is exactly what caused the misery.
Between 1858 and 1947 the British wrote India's rules nine or ten times over. Students treat that as ten separate things to memorise. It is one chain, and the links are easier to hold than the pieces.
The logic never changes. After every burst of Indian pressure, the Crown offers a slightly larger share of a government it still controls; Indians find the offer short; pressure builds again; the next Act follows. Read the dates that way and they stop being a random list.
The chain also explains the traps. Almost every wrong answer in this chapter is a swap between two neighbouring links — dyarchy placed in the wrong Act, separate electorates dated to the wrong year, Cripps confused with the Cabinet Mission.
BPSC TRE-4 Part II, SSC CGL and CHSL general awareness, RRB NTPC, UPSC Prelims and the classroom-framed history items in CTET all take questions from this single stretch of eighty-nine years.
1858 to 1909 — the Crown takes over and starts letting Indians watch.
Government of India Act 1858 ended East India Company rule after the Revolt of 1857. It created the Secretary of State for India, sitting in London with a Council of India to advise him, and it renamed the Governor-General as Viceroy. Canning was both the last Governor-General of the Company era and the first Viceroy.
Indian Councils Act 1861 began decentralisation, restored legislative powers to Bombay and Madras, and let the Viceroy nominate a few Indians as non-official members. Canning also introduced the portfolio system, the ancestor of today's ministries.
Indian Councils Act 1892 enlarged the councils, allowed members to discuss the budget and put questions to the executive, and introduced a limited, indirect element of election — though the word 'election' was carefully avoided in the Act.
Indian Councils Act 1909, the Morley–Minto Reforms, is the one that matters most: it introduced separate electorates for Muslims, legalising communal representation. Satyendra Prasad Sinha became the first Indian in the Viceroy's Executive Council.
The two big Acts, and the single word that separates them: dyarchy.
Government of India Act 1919, the Montagu–Chelmsford Reforms, introduced dyarchy in the provinces. Provincial subjects were split in two. Transferred subjects — education, health, local government — went to ministers answerable to the legislature. Reserved subjects — police, land revenue, justice — stayed with the Governor. The Act also made the central legislature bicameral, separated central and provincial budgets, created the office of High Commissioner for India in London, and widened separate electorates to Sikhs, Anglo-Indians, Europeans and Indian Christians. It did not invent separate electorates; 1909 did.
Government of India Act 1935 did the opposite swap. It abolished dyarchy in the provinces and gave them provincial autonomy, with ministers responsible to elected legislatures — and it introduced dyarchy at the Centre instead. It provided for an All-India Federation including the princely states, which never came into being because the princes did not accede. It divided powers into Federal, Provincial and Concurrent Lists, set up a Federal Court in 1937, and separated Burma from India.
The commissions and missions, in order.
Simon Commission, appointed 1927 and in India in 1928, was to review the working of the 1919 Act. All seven members were British, chaired by Sir John Simon — not one Indian. 'Simon, go back' was the answer. During a Lahore protest against it, Lala Lajpat Rai was injured in a lathi charge and died weeks later.
The Nehru Report of 1928, drafted under Motilal Nehru, was India's own reply, asking for dominion status.
Three Round Table Conferences followed in London: the First (1930–31) without the Congress, the Second (1931) with Gandhi attending after the Gandhi–Irwin Pact, and the Third (1932) again without him.
The Communal Award of 1932 gave separate electorates to the Depressed Classes. Gandhi's fast in Yerwada jail led to the Poona Pact with Dr B. R. Ambedkar, which replaced them with reserved seats inside a joint electorate.
Then the wartime offers: the August Offer (1940), the Cripps Mission (1942), which Gandhi called a post-dated cheque, and the three-member Cabinet Mission (1946). The Mountbatten Plan of 3 June 1947 and the Indian Independence Act closed the chain.
What exams actually ask.
SSC CGL, CHSL and MTS ask one-line matching: which Act brought dyarchy, which Act brought separate electorates, who chaired which body. They love the 1919-versus-1935 dyarchy swap because both answers look right.
RRB NTPC and Group D prefer the people and the phrases — the first Viceroy, the first Indian in the Viceroy's Executive Council, who said 'post-dated cheque', who signed the Poona Pact.
BPSC TRE-4 Part II asks the same facts in plain language but often pairs a date with an outcome, so a year alone is not enough; know what each Act actually changed.
UPSC Prelims goes for the negative form — 'Which of the following was NOT a member of the Cabinet Mission?' — where Lord Wavell is the standing trap, because he was the Viceroy who received the Mission, not part of it.
CTET turns the chapter into classroom-framed items on the freedom struggle timeline, so ordering questions matter more than any single date.
Points to Remember
· 1858: Company rule ends; Secretary of State created; Governor-General becomes Viceroy; Canning is the first Viceroy.
· 1861: decentralisation begins; portfolio system; Indians nominated as non-official members.
· 1892: budget discussion and questions allowed; indirect election introduced without the word.
· 1909 Morley–Minto: separate electorates for Muslims; S. P. Sinha, first Indian in the Viceroy's Executive Council.
· 1919 Montford: dyarchy in the provinces; bicameral central legislature; separate electorates widened, not created.
· 1935: provincial autonomy; dyarchy shifted to the Centre; Federal Court 1937; Federation never formed; Burma separated.
· 1927 Simon Commission: seven British members, chaired by Sir John Simon.
· 1932: Communal Award, then the Poona Pact between Gandhi and Ambedkar.
· 1946 Cabinet Mission: Pethick-Lawrence, Stafford Cripps, A. V. Alexander.
· 1947: Mountbatten Plan of 3 June; Indian Independence Act; two dominions.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: Fix one anchor sentence — 'dyarchy moves upward' — and the commonest trap in this chapter dies. Dyarchy sits in the provinces in 1919 and moves up to the Centre in 1935.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: For every Act, memorise one verb, not a paragraph: 1909 created separate electorates, 1919 widened them, 1935 replaced dyarchy with autonomy. The verb is what the option strings actually test.
Before the Congress held its first session in 1885, the British had already put down dozens of armed risings. They were fought by tribal communities and tenant farmers, in the forests of Chhotanagpur and the indigo districts of Bengal, and almost none of them appear in the story most students learn as 'the freedom struggle'.
Exams treat this as a separate chapter with its own logic, and that logic is worth understanding once. These risings were not about self-rule. They were about land, forest and debt — a tribal community losing its customary right over land to an outsider, or a tenant forced to grow a crop he could not eat.
And almost every large rising ended the same way: it was crushed, and then a law was passed. That pairing is the single most examined thing in the chapter. Learn each uprising with the Act it forced, never alone.
SSC CGL and CHSL, RRB NTPC, BPSC TRE-4 general studies and UPSC Prelims all draw from the same list of about a dozen.
The tribal risings, in order.
The Chuar uprising ran through the Jungle Mahal of Midnapore from about 1768 to 1799. The Bhils of Khandesh rose repeatedly from 1818. In the north-east, the Ahom revolt of 1828 was led by Gomdhar Konwar, and the Khasi resistance of 1829 to 1833 by Tirot Sing.
The Kol uprising of 1831-32 in Chhotanagpur, led by Buddho Bhagat, followed the transfer of tribal land to outsider farmers and moneylenders.
The Santhal Hool of 1855-56 is the biggest of them. Led by the brothers Sidhu and Kanhu, with Chand and Bhairav beside them, it was aimed at zamindars, moneylenders and the officials who protected them. It was crushed, and the British then carved out the separate district of Santhal Parganas with special rules on land transfer.
The Munda Ulgulan — 'the great tumult' — of 1899-1900 was led by Birsa Munda against the loss of khuntkatti collective landholding. It produced the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act of 1908. Later, the Tana Bhagat movement of 1914 under Jatra Bhagat and the Rampa rebellion of 1922-24 under Alluri Sitarama Raju continued the same line.
The peasant risings, and the Acts they produced.
The Sanyasi Rebellion of roughly 1763 to 1800 swept Bengal and Bihar after the famine of 1770, when wandering ascetics and dispossessed peasants took up arms together. It is the rising later remembered through the novel Anandamath by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.
The Indigo Revolt of 1859-60 began in Nadia district of Bengal under Digambar Biswas and Bishnu Biswas. Ryots simply refused to sow indigo, which planters forced on them at a loss. The play Nil Darpan by Dinabandhu Mitra carried the story to the cities, and the government appointed an Indigo Commission in 1860.
The Pabna agrarian unrest of 1873 in East Bengal was a rent strike against zamindars, fought largely through the law courts. It fed directly into the Bengal Tenancy Act of 1885.
The Deccan Riots of 1875 in Poona and Ahmednagar were aimed not at planters or zamindars but at moneylenders, whose bonds the peasants seized and burned. The answer was the Deccan Agriculturists' Relief Act of 1879. The Kuka movement in Punjab under Ram Singh belongs to the same decade.
In the twentieth century the same grievances stopped being local and became organised.
The Awadh Kisan Sabha of 1920, under Baba Ramchandra, turned tenant anger in the United Provinces into a membership movement. The Eka or 'unity' movement of 1921 under Madari Pasi in the Hardoi belt grew straight out of it, with peasants swearing collective oaths not to pay more than the recorded rent.
In Malabar the Moplah rebellion of 1921 mixed tenant grievance with religious mobilisation and was put down with great severity.
The Bardoli satyagraha of 1928 in Gujarat was the disciplined version of all this: a refusal to pay an increased land revenue assessment, organised by Vallabhbhai Patel, who earned the title Sardar there.
The line ends in an all-India body. The All India Kisan Sabha was founded at Lucknow in 1936, with Swami Sahajanand Saraswati as its first president and N. G. Ranga as general secretary. From that point peasant demands were put as national politics rather than as local revolt — which is exactly why the chapter is treated as background to the freedom struggle rather than apart from it.
What exams actually ask.
SSC CGL and CHSL ask leader-to-uprising matching, and the pairs they favour are Sidhu and Kanhu with the Santhal Hool, Birsa Munda with the Ulgulan, and Buddho Bhagat with the Kol uprising. Learn those three first.
RRB NTPC and Group D ask years, usually as a set of four dates around the real one, and they like the Indigo Revolt and the Deccan Riots.
BPSC TRE-4 general studies asks the uprising-to-Act link: which rising produced the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act, which produced the Bengal Tenancy Act. Since the exam is a Bihar one, the Chhotanagpur risings are asked more often than the rest.
UPSC Prelims asks the cause rather than the name — whether a rising was against planters, zamindars, moneylenders or forest law.
CTET keeps to the school syllabus version: Birsa Munda, the Santhals, and what the word Ulgulan means.
Three traps worth naming: Sidhu and Kanhu attached to the Munda rising instead of the Santhal one; the Deccan Riots read as anti-zamindar when they were anti-moneylender; and Nil Darpan credited to Bankim Chandra, who wrote Anandamath, not the indigo play.
Points to Remember
· Sanyasi Rebellion — Bengal and Bihar, about 1763-1800, after the famine of 1770.

· Pabna agrarian unrest — 1873 → Bengal Tenancy Act, 1885.
· Deccan Riots — Poona and Ahmednagar, 1875, against moneylenders → Deccan Agriculturists' Relief Act, 1879.
· Munda Ulgulan — 1899-1900, Birsa Munda → Chotanagpur Tenancy Act, 1908.
· Tana Bhagat 1914 (Jatra Bhagat); Rampa 1922-24 (Alluri Sitarama Raju).
· Awadh Kisan Sabha 1920 (Baba Ramchandra); Eka 1921 (Madari Pasi); Bardoli 1928 (Vallabhbhai Patel).
· All India Kisan Sabha — Lucknow, 1936; first president Swami Sahajanand Saraswati.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: Build the whole chapter as a three-column table — uprising, leader, Act that followed. Most questions are simply one column asking for another, and a rising with no Act beside it is one you have not finished learning.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: When a question gives you only a year, use the target to place it. Anti-planter means indigo and the 1850s; anti-moneylender means the Deccan and the 1870s; loss of tribal land means Chhotanagpur, either 1831 or 1899.
Independence arrived with two jobs unfinished. One was a border that had not yet been drawn. The other was a map full of holes: roughly 565 princely states, covering about two-fifths of the subcontinent, which were not British territory at all and so did not transfer automatically to either new country.
Exams treat these as one chapter because they happened together, in the same eighteen months, and were handled by the same handful of people. But they test them differently. Partition is asked as a sequence of named plans and Acts. Integration is asked as three hard cases.
That is the shape to store. For partition, learn the chain: Cabinet Mission, Direct Action Day, the 3 June Plan, the Indian Independence Act, the Radcliffe award. For the states, learn Junagadh, Hyderabad and Kashmir — because the other 562 signed without drama, and the three that did not were each settled by a different method.
SSC CGL, RRB NTPC, BPSC TRE-4 general studies, UPSC Prelims and the school-syllabus version in CTET all draw from this.
The road to partition, in order.
The Cabinet Mission of 1946 — Pethick-Lawrence, Stafford Cripps and A. V. Alexander — rejected a separate Pakistan and proposed a grouped federation instead. It failed, and the Muslim League called Direct Action Day on 16 August 1946. An Interim Government took office on 2 September 1946.
Lord Mountbatten arrived in March 1947 as the last Viceroy, with instructions to transfer power quickly. His plan was announced on 3 June 1947 and is asked by both names — the 3 June Plan and the Mountbatten Plan. It accepted partition, allowed Bengal and Punjab to be divided, and advanced the date of transfer to August 1947.
The Indian Independence Act passed the British Parliament and received assent on 18 July 1947. It created two dominions, ended British paramountcy over the princely states, and made the Constituent Assemblies sovereign.
Cyril Radcliffe chaired the boundary commissions, dividing Bengal and Punjab in about five weeks. His award was published on 17 August 1947 — two days after independence, so that the transfer could not be delayed by argument over the line.
Now the states. When paramountcy lapsed on 15 August 1947, every princely state was in law free to join India, join Pakistan, or stay out.
A States Department was created in July 1947 to close that gap. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel headed it and V. P. Menon was its secretary — a pairing worth memorising, because papers ask for either name.
Their instrument was, literally, an instrument: the Instrument of Accession, a short document by which a ruler handed over only three subjects — defence, external affairs and communications — and kept everything else for the moment. Asking for three subjects rather than full merger is what made signing easy, and it is why almost every state signed before independence.
The argument used alongside it was blunt: British protection was ending, and a small state alone would have neither an army nor a treasury. Mountbatten made the same case to the princes directly.
By 15 August 1947 all but three had acceded. Full merger of administrations, and the privy purses paid to rulers in exchange, came later — the purses were finally abolished by the 26th Amendment in 1971.
The three hard cases, each solved differently — which is the point.
Junagadh, on the Kathiawar coast, had a Hindu-majority population and a Nawab who acceded to Pakistan although the state had no land border with it. He left the country; a plebiscite was held in February 1948 and voted overwhelmingly for India. Method: a vote.
Hyderabad was the largest state, landlocked inside India, with the Nizam refusing both dominions and signing only a one-year Standstill Agreement in November 1947. As order broke down, Indian forces moved in during September 1948 in an operation code-named Polo. Method: force.
Jammu and Kashmir had Maharaja Hari Singh, who also wanted to stay out. When tribal irregulars invaded from the west in October 1947, he asked India for military help, and India made accession the condition of it. He signed the Instrument of Accession on 26 October 1947. Method: accession under invasion, followed by a war and a United Nations ceasefire on 1 January 1949.
One rearranged map remained. Andhra was created in 1953 after Potti Sriramulu's fast unto death; the Fazl Ali Commission reported in 1955; and the States Reorganisation Act of 1956 redrew India on linguistic lines.
What exams actually ask.
SSC CGL and CHSL ask single facts with four near dates: when the Indian Independence Act received assent, when the Radcliffe award was published, when Hari Singh signed. Learn the dates to the day for those three, and to the month for everything else.
RRB NTPC prefers names to dates — who chaired the boundary commission, who headed the States Department, what Operation Polo was.
BPSC TRE-4 general studies asks the method question: which state came in by plebiscite, which by military action. The three-cases-three-methods framing answers most of what it sets.
UPSC Prelims goes at the legal mechanism — what the Instrument of Accession actually transferred, and what lapse of paramountcy meant.
CTET keeps to Patel, the Instrument of Accession and the linguistic reorganisation of 1956.
Three traps worth naming. The 3 June Plan confused with the Cabinet Mission Plan, which was the opposite proposal a year earlier. Junagadh and Hyderabad swapped, so the plebiscite gets attached to the police action. And the Instrument of Accession read as full merger, when it handed over only defence, external affairs and communications.
Points to Remember
· Cabinet Mission 1946 — Pethick-Lawrence, Cripps, Alexander; rejected a separate Pakistan.
· Direct Action Day — 16 August 1946. Interim Government — 2 September 1946.
· 3 June Plan, also called the Mountbatten Plan — 1947; accepted partition and the division of Bengal and Punjab.
· Indian Independence Act — assent 18 July 1947; created two dominions and ended paramountcy.
· Radcliffe award published 17 August 1947, two days after independence.
· States Department — July 1947; Sardar Patel head, V. P. Menon secretary.
· Instrument of Accession transferred only defence, external affairs and communications.
· Junagadh — plebiscite, February 1948. Hyderabad — Operation Polo, September 1948. Kashmir — accession signed 26 October 1947.
· Andhra, the first linguistic state, 1953; Fazl Ali Commission 1955; States Reorganisation Act 1956.
· Privy purses abolished by the 26th Amendment, 1971.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: Store the three hard cases by method, not by name — vote, force, invasion. Almost every question about them is really asking how the state came in, and the method recalls the state faster than the state recalls the method.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: When four options are all 1947 dates, sort them by what kind of event each is. Plans come before Acts, Acts before independence, and the boundary award after it — the order of the events fixes the order of the dates without memorising them separately.
The freedom struggle had a second strand that never met at Congress sessions. It worked in secret societies, it chose targets rather than crowds, and its members were tried in named conspiracy cases and hanged young.
This strand is worth a whole short of its own because exams ask it differently from the rest of modern history. Nobody is asked to assess the Non-Cooperation Movement here. They are asked who, where, in which case and in which year — case name to person, person to date, organisation to city.
So store it as three waves rather than as a story. The first, from 1897 to about 1915, is the age of the bomb and the pistol in Bengal, Maharashtra and Punjab. The second, from 1924 to 1934, is the HRA and HSRA generation, which added a socialist programme to the pistol. The third, from 1942 to 1946, moves the fight out of India altogether, into the Azad Hind Fauj.
SSC CGL, RRB NTPC, BPSC TRE-4 general studies and UPSC Prelims all draw from this list.
Wave one, 1897 to 1915.
The Chapekar brothers of Pune shot Rand, the plague commissioner, in 1897 — the first political assassination of the period.
Bengal organised next. Anushilan Samiti was set up at Dhaka in 1902 and the Jugantar group grew out of it in Calcutta. In Maharashtra, V. D. Savarkar's Abhinav Bharat came up at Nasik in 1904.
The case every paper asks about is Muzaffarpur, 1908: Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki threw a bomb at a carriage believed to be carrying Magistrate Kingsford and killed two Englishwomen instead. Prafulla Chaki shot himself; Khudiram Bose was hanged at Muzaffarpur the same year, aged eighteen. The Alipore Bomb Case followed, with Aurobindo Ghosh among the accused.
Madan Lal Dhingra shot Curzon Wyllie in London in 1909. In 1912 Rash Behari Bose's group bombed Viceroy Hardinge's procession at Chandni Chowk in the Delhi Conspiracy Case.
Abroad, the Ghadar Party was founded at San Francisco in 1913, with Sohan Singh Bhakna as president and Lala Har Dayal its moving spirit, and it published the paper Ghadar.
Wave two, 1924 to 1934 — the generation exams ask about most.
The Hindustan Republican Association was founded at Kanpur in 1924 by Sachindranath Sanyal, Ram Prasad Bismil and Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee. Its one famous action was the Kakori train robbery of 9 August 1925, meant to fund the organisation from government money. Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqullah Khan, Roshan Singh and Rajendra Lahiri were hanged for it.
The survivors reorganised. Bhagat Singh and Bhagwati Charan Vohra had already started the Naujawan Bharat Sabha at Lahore in 1926; in September 1928, at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, the HRA was rebuilt as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, with Chandrashekhar Azad as commander. The added word was 'Socialist', and it was not decoration — independence was now to be followed by a social revolution.
Then the chain of dates. Lala Lajpat Rai died in November 1928 after a lathi charge; Saunders was shot at Lahore on 17 December 1928 in reply. On 8 April 1929 Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw a bomb in the Central Legislative Assembly and stayed to be arrested, because the trial was the point.
The same wave ends in a run of deaths worth knowing exactly. Jatin Das died in Lahore jail in September 1929 after a hunger strike of sixty-three days over the treatment of political prisoners. Chandrashekhar Azad was killed at Alfred Park, Allahabad, on 27 February 1931. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were hanged in the Lahore Conspiracy Case on 23 March 1931.
Bengal's last great action was the Chittagong Armoury Raid of 18 April 1930, led by Surya Sen, known as Masterda, who was hanged in 1934. Women were central to this phase: Pritilata Waddedar led an attack in 1932, Kalpana Dutt was tried alongside Surya Sen, and Bina Das fired at the Governor at a Calcutta University convocation in 1932.
Wave three left the country. Captain Mohan Singh raised a first Indian National Army from prisoners of war in 1942, and Rash Behari Bose led the Indian Independence League in Tokyo. Subhas Chandra Bose, who had resigned as Congress president and founded the Forward Bloc in 1939, escaped India in 1941, reached Southeast Asia, and took command of the INA at Singapore in July 1943.
What exams actually ask.
The Azad Hind facts asked most are these. Bose proclaimed the Provisional Government of Free India — Arzi Hukumat-e-Azad Hind — at Singapore on 21 October 1943. Its women's regiment was the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, commanded by Captain Lakshmi Sahgal. The slogans 'Dilli Chalo' and 'Jai Hind' are his, and so is the line about blood and freedom, spoken in Burma in 1944. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, handed over in December 1943, were renamed Shaheed and Swaraj. The INA trials opened at the Red Fort in Delhi in November 1945 against Shah Nawaz Khan, P. K. Sahgal and G. S. Dhillon, with Bhulabhai Desai leading the defence, and the Royal Indian Navy mutiny followed at Bombay in February 1946.
SSC and RRB ask person-to-case matching. BPSC TRE-4 asks founding years and cities. UPSC Prelims asks which organisation a person belonged to.
Three traps: HRA of 1924 confused with HSRA of 1928; the Saunders shooting dated to 1929 instead of December 1928; and the first INA credited to Subhas Bose, when Mohan Singh raised it a year before Bose arrived.

⚠ Exam Tip 1: Learn this chapter as case name to person, not person to biography. Papers almost always hand you the case — Kakori, Alipore, Muzaffarpur, Lahore — and ask for the man, so index your memory the way the question is worded.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: Fix 1928 as the pivot year. The Simon Commission protest, Lajpat Rai's death, the founding of HSRA and the Saunders shooting all fall in it, which means any option dating one of those four outside 1928 can be struck out at once.

Sixty Sessions, But Only Ten That Matter for the Exam
The Indian National Congress met almost every year from 1885 to 1947, but no exam tests the full list. What gets asked, repeatedly and across SSC, BPSC, Railway and UPSC-pattern papers, is a small, fixed set of 'landmark' sessions — the ones that hosted a first, a split, a reunion, a pact, or a resolution students would recognise by name even outside a history class.
The trick to this chapter is recognising that it rewards memorising ten president-venue-year triples cold, not reading a general narrative. Once you can say 'Surat, 1907, the split' or 'Lahore, 1929, Nehru, Purna Swaraj' as fast as you'd say your own date of birth, the entire question type collapses into ten seconds of recall rather than reasoning.
The Founding and the Early Split (1885–1907)
1885, Bombay — the first session, presided over by Womesh Chunder Bonnerjee, with 72 delegates. A.O. Hume organised it but never presided; the presidential chair always went to an Indian.
1906, Calcutta — Dadabhai Naoroji presided, and it was here that the word 'Swaraj' was first used publicly as the Congress's stated goal, before the Moderate–Extremist rift had fully broken it apart.
1907, Surat — the famous Surat Split, where the Moderates (led by Gokhale) and the Extremists (led by Tilak, Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal — the 'Lal-Bal-Pal' trio) formally divided over the pace and method of the freedom struggle, and the Extremists walked out. This is the single most-asked 'what happened at this session' question in the whole chapter.
Reunion and the League Pact, Then the Gandhian Landmarks (1916–1931)
1916, Lucknow — presided over by Ambica Charan Majumdar, this session did two things at once: it reunited the Moderates and Extremists nine years after the Surat split, and it sealed the Lucknow Pact, the only occasion the Congress and the Muslim League ever agreed on a joint scheme of constitutional reforms.
1920, Nagpur — the session that formally adopted the Non-Cooperation programme and gave the Congress a new, mass-membership constitution (the Non-Cooperation resolution itself had first been passed at a special Calcutta session months earlier; Nagpur ratified and institutionalised it).
1929, Lahore — presided over by Jawaharlal Nehru, this session passed the Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) resolution, replacing the earlier demand for Dominion Status; 26 January was fixed as the date to be celebrated as Independence Day from 1930 onward.
1931, Karachi — presided over by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, held right after the Gandhi–Irwin Pact, this session adopted the Fundamental Rights and National Economic Programme resolution, the Congress's first formal economic and rights charter.
The 'Firsts' Exams Especially Love
1917, Calcutta — Annie Besant became the first woman to preside over an INC session. She was British-born and Irish by birth, which is exactly the detail papers use to build a trap against the next fact.
1925, Kanpur (then spelled Cawnpore) — Sarojini Naidu became the first Indian-born woman to preside over the Congress, eight years after Besant. The pairing of these two — 'first woman' versus 'first Indian woman' — is the most commonly tested pair of facts in this entire topic, precisely because it is so easy to blur the two together under time pressure.
1938, Haripura — Subhas Chandra Bose presided for the first time (he was re-elected the following year at Tripuri, 1939, but that re-election and the conflict with Gandhi that followed belongs to a different, later story than the one this card covers).
What Exams Actually Ask
SSC, Railway and BPSC General Studies papers almost always phrase this as a direct triple-match: 'Who presided over the ___ session?' or 'Where was the ___ resolution passed?' — testing whether you can retrieve one fixed fact instantly, not whether you understand the movement's broader arc.
UPSC-pattern prelims-style papers sometimes go one level harder, asking you to match a session to what it achieved rather than just its president — for instance, distinguishing the Lahore session's Purna Swaraj resolution from the Karachi session's Fundamental Rights resolution, two sessions just two years apart with genuinely different content.
The most repeated trap across every exam: swapping adjacent sessions' presidents or venues — mixing up Lahore-1929-Nehru with Karachi-1931-Patel, or confusing Besant's 'first woman' with Naidu's 'first Indian woman.' Always anchor the year first; the year almost never gets swapped in a distractor, even when the name or venue does.
Points to Remember
⚠ Exam Tip 1: Learn each fact as a fixed year-venue-president-resolution block, never as loose pieces — a distractor almost always keeps the year correct and swaps only one other element.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: When two sessions sit close in time (Lahore 1929 and Karachi 1931; Besant 1917 and Naidu 1925), drill that specific pair separately — these adjacent-year confusions are exactly what the question is testing.
Why This Timeline Decides Marks
India was not conquered in one battle. A trading company slowly turned into a ruler through a chain of wars, treaties and clever alliances, and every link in that chain is a favourite exam item. Questions rarely ask for a story; they ask for a year, a treaty name, a Governor-General or the loser of a particular battle. The trap is that the names sound alike: Treaty of Madras, Treaty of Mangalore, Treaty of Seringapatam. This short walks the whole chain in order: first the European companies and their rivalry, then the Carnatic Wars against the French, then Bengal (Plassey 1757 and Buxar 1764), and finally the Mysore, Maratha and Sikh wars. If you can say who fought whom, in which year, and which treaty ended it, you can answer almost every question on this chapter without guessing.
Europeans Arrive and the Carnatic Wars
Order of arrival is a classic question: Portuguese (Vasco da Gama reached Calicut in 1498), English East India Company (charter 1600), Dutch (1602), Danes (1616) and French (Compagnie des Indes, 1664). The Portuguese came first and left first in importance; the Dutch concentrated on the spice islands; the English and French were left to fight for India. The Carnatic Wars were that fight. The First (1746 to 1748) ended with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in Europe. The Second (1749 to 1754) was a succession quarrel in Hyderabad and the Carnatic in which Dupleix and Robert Clive both played roles. The Third (1758 to 1763) was decided at the Battle of Wandiwash (1760), where Eyre Coote defeated Count de Lally. The Treaty of Paris (1763) left the French with trading posts only, such as Pondicherry, and no political ambition.
Bengal: Plassey (1757) and Buxar (1764)
Plassey was won by betrayal more than by battle. Robert Clive faced Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah, but the commander Mir Jafar and the banker Jagat Seth had already agreed to side with the Company. Mir Jafar became Nawab, and Bengal's treasury began to flow to the Company. When Mir Jafar failed to pay enough, he was replaced by Mir Qasim, who tried to reform and then fought. Buxar (1764) was the real test: Hector Munro defeated the combined armies of Mir Qasim, Shuja-ud-Daula of Awadh and the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II. The Treaty of Allahabad (1765) followed, giving the Company the diwani, the right to collect revenue, of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, while the Nizamat, law and order, stayed nominally with the Nawab. This dual system, introduced by Clive, gave power without responsibility.
Mysore, Marathas, Sikhs and the Tools of Expansion
Four Anglo-Mysore wars: 1767 to 1769 (Haidar Ali, Treaty of Madras), 1780 to 1784 (Treaty of Mangalore), 1790 to 1792 (Tipu Sultan, Cornwallis, Treaty of Seringapatam, half of Tipu's land lost) and 1799 (Tipu killed at Seringapatam under Wellesley). The Anglo-Maratha wars: First ended with the Treaty of Salbai (1782), the Second (1803 to 1805) broke the Peshwa through Treaty of Bassein (1802), and the Third (1817 to 1819) ended the Peshwa office under Hastings. The Sikh wars: 1845 to 1846 (Treaty of Lahore) and 1848 to 1849, after which Dalhousie annexed Punjab. Two tools helped: Wellesley's Subsidiary Alliance (Hyderabad was first, 1798), which forced a ruler to keep a British force and expel rival Europeans, and Dalhousie's Doctrine of Lapse, which annexed states without a natural heir, such as Satara (1848).
What Exams Actually Ask
BPSC TRE-4 and CTET (as classroom-framed history items) lean on direct recall: which battle gave diwani rights, which treaty followed Buxar. SSC and Railway ask the "match the column" version: Wandiwash with 1760, Buxar with 1764, Salbai with 1782, Seringapatam with 1792. UPSC prelims prefers statement questions on the Subsidiary Alliance and Doctrine of Lapse, for example which state was first to accept the alliance or which was annexed by lapse. The recurring traps are these. Plassey 1757 is confused with Buxar 1764; Treaty of Madras (1769, First Mysore) is confused with Treaty of Mangalore (1784, Second Mysore); Cornwallis, Wellesley and Hastings are swapped; and "first to arrive" is answered Dutch or English instead of Portuguese. Another trap is the Treaty of Allahabad, which gave diwani, not full sovereignty, over Bengal, Bihar and Orissa.
Points to Remember
Arrival order: Portuguese 1498, English 1600, Dutch 1602, Danes 1616, French 1664. Third Carnatic War was decided at Wandiwash (1760); Treaty of Paris 1763. Plassey 1757 (Clive versus Siraj-ud-Daulah, Mir Jafar's betrayal); Buxar 1764 (Munro versus Mir Qasim, Shuja-ud-Daula and Shah Alam II); Treaty of Allahabad 1765 gave diwani of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. Mysore treaties: Madras 1769, Mangalore 1784, Seringapatam 1792; Tipu died in 1799. Maratha treaties: Salbai 1782, Bassein 1802; Peshwa ended in 1818. Sikh wars: 1845 to 1846 and 1848 to 1849, Punjab annexed. The Subsidiary Alliance began with Hyderabad (1798); the Doctrine of Lapse annexed Satara (1848).
⚠ Exam Tip 1: Pair every treaty with its war number: Madras is First Mysore, Mangalore is Second, Seringapatam is Third, and Tipu's death is the Fourth.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: Buxar, not Plassey, gave the Company legal power: the diwani came from the Treaty of Allahabad after Buxar, so choose Buxar when a question asks about political and revenue control.
⚠ Exam Tip 1:
⚠ Exam Tip 2:

⚠ The two traps in this card. Sachchidananda Sinha chaired the first sitting; Rajendra Prasad was the elected President — both Bihari, and the sittings were two days apart, so read whether the question says first sitting or President of the Assembly. And two Bharat Ratnas sit here decades apart: Rajendra Prasad in 1962, in his lifetime, and J.P. in 1999, posthumously.
⚠ Exam Tip 1:
