Hindi Diwas marked with the 6th All India Official Language Conference in Navi Mumbai
2026-09-15
Hindi Diwas was observed on 14 September, with Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurating the 6th All India Official Language Conference at the CIDCO Exhibition Centre in Navi Mumbai, a two-day event on 14 and 15 September expected to draw around 7,000 officials, Rajbhasha personnel, writers and academics. Shah presented the Rajbhasha Kirti and Rajbhasha Gaurav Awards for 2025-26 to ministries, public sector undertakings, banks and individuals, and said Hindi acts as a bridge across India's languages while mother tongues remain central to culture, identity and learning. The date marks 14 September 1949, when the Constituent Assembly, after nearly three years of debate, approved the Munshi-Ayyangar formula: Hindi in the Devanagari script as the official language of the Union, English as an associate official language for fifteen years, and the international form of numerals — provisions that became Articles 343 to 351. Official language provisions are directly examinable in both the Language and General Studies papers.

Supreme Court: corporal punishment by a teacher without sexual intent is not an offence under POCSO
2026-09-15
The Supreme Court quashed POCSO proceedings against a West Bengal schoolteacher, holding that inappropriate conduct or corporal punishment, in the absence of the requisite sexual intent, cannot by itself justify prosecution under the Act's stringent provisions. The geography teacher at a school in Alipurduar district had been accused of beating two Class 10 girls on their backs and waists after they failed to answer questions in class; the bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Atul S. Chandurkar set aside the Calcutta High Court's order of 27 April 2026 and quashed the proceedings. The Court stressed that sexual assault under the Act requires physical contact done with sexual intent, while also observing that a teacher must be more sensitive in dealing with young students, particularly girl students. Note what the ruling does not do: corporal punishment remains prohibited in schools under Section 17 of the Right to Education Act, 2009, and remains a disciplinary and service matter — the judgment only limits when the POCSO Act applies. Child-protection law and teachers' legal duties are directly relevant to your own service conditions.

Telecom Department says its Financial Fraud Risk Indicator has prevented over ₹5,000 crore in suspected cyber fraud
2026-09-10
The Department of Telecommunications said its Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) has helped prevent suspected cyber fraud transactions worth more than ₹5,000 crore in the fifteen months since it was launched on 22 May 2025. FRI classifies mobile numbers in real time as Medium, High or Very High risk and passes that signal to banks and other financial institutions at the moment a transaction is initiated, shifting fraud response from after-the-fact recovery to prevention. It runs on the Department's Digital Intelligence Platform, launched in 2024, which now links more than 1,600 organisations including banks, payment service providers, insurers and pension entities; the cumulative figure reported rose from ₹139.16 crore in August 2025 to ₹5,043.73 crore in August 2026. Cyber security initiatives such as FRI, Sanchar Saathi, Chakshu and the 1930 helpline are common General Studies questions.

Nine-judge Supreme Court Bench modifies the 1978 'triple test' for what counts as an industry
2026-08-22
A nine-judge Bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant held, by a 5:4 majority, that the expansive definition of 'industry' laid down in Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board v. R. Rajappa (1978) will not govern the interpretation of the Industrial Relations Code, 2020; the 1978 ruling continues to apply to legacy disputes under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947. The 1978 'triple test' — systematic activity, organised employer-employee cooperation, and production or distribution of goods and services to satisfy human wants — had brought hospitals, educational institutions and municipalities within the meaning of industry. Landmark Supreme Court judgments and labour law both appear in the GS polity section.
