The Vedic Age, and how it reached Bihar

Early Vedic (Rig Vedic), c. 1500–1000 BCE — the Rig Veda is the oldest of the four Vedas and the oldest text in an Indo-European language. Life centred on the Sapta Sindhu, the land of seven rivers in the north-west. Pastoral, tribal, no cities.

Later Vedic, c. 1000–600 BCE — the decisive shift for Bihar. With iron came the clearing of the Gangetic forests, and Aryan settlement moved eastward down the Ganga valley.

• The Shatapatha Brahmana records this eastward spread, carrying the sacred fire as far as Videha
• Videha, that is Mithila — north Bihar — enters the record here, and its king Janaka becomes the archetype of the philosopher-king
• The Later Vedic period is when the four Vedas are complete: Rig, Sama, Yajur, Atharva

Why this matters for the syllabus: the paper asks for Indian history and the salient features of Bihar's history. Videha and Mithila are where the two first meet.

वैदिक काल, और वह बिहार तक कैसे पहुँचा

पूर्व वैदिक (ऋग्वैदिक), लगभग 1500–1000 ईसा पूर्व — ऋग्वेद चारों वेदों में प्राचीनतम है और किसी भी भारोपीय भाषा का प्राचीनतम ग्रंथ। जीवन उत्तर-पश्चिम में सप्त सिंधु के आसपास केंद्रित था। पशुचारी, कबीलाई, नगर नहीं।

उत्तर वैदिक, लगभग 1000–600 ईसा पूर्व — बिहार के लिए निर्णायक मोड़। लोहे के आने से गंगा के वनों की सफ़ाई हुई और आर्य बस्तियाँ पूर्व की ओर गंगा घाटी में बढ़ीं।

• शतपथ ब्राह्मण इस पूर्वी विस्तार का वर्णन करता है, जिसमें पवित्र अग्नि विदेह तक ले जाई गई
• विदेह, अर्थात मिथिला — उत्तर बिहार — यहीं अभिलेख में आता है, और उसके राजा जनक दार्शनिक-राजा के प्रतीक बनते हैं
• उत्तर वैदिक काल में चारों वेद पूर्ण होते हैं: ऋग्, साम, यजुर्, अथर्व

पाठ्यक्रम के लिए महत्त्व: पेपर भारतीय इतिहास एवं बिहार के इतिहास की प्रमुख विशेषताएँ माँगता है। विदेह एवं मिथिला वह बिंदु हैं जहाँ दोनों पहली बार मिलते हैं।
