Ras (रस) is the emotional flavour a reader or listener experiences from a poem, a scene or a story. The feeling already sleeping inside every human being is called the sthayi bhav (स्थायी भाव); when a poet awakens it through situation, expression and passing moods, the awakened feeling becomes ras. Bharatmuni set this out in the Natyashastra with the famous sutra 'विभावानुभावव्यभिचारिसंयोगाद्रसनिष्पत्तिः' — ras arises from the union of vibhav, anubhav and vyabhichari bhav.
For an exam, this is the cheapest chapter in Hindi. There is no reasoning, no calculation, no interpretation — only a fixed table of nine rasas and nine sthayi bhavs, four component terms and two or three numbers. BPSC TRE-4, Bihar STET, CTET Hindi and the Hindi sections of SSC and Railway all set at least one question here every cycle, and it is always the same question wearing a different sentence.
Ras has exactly four components Papers ask the count as often as the names.
Worked example: a soldier feels utsah, the enemy army is the alamban, the war drum the uddipan, his flushed face the anubhav — the result is Veer Ras.
The nine rasas and their sthayi bhavs. This table is the whole chapter — nothing else is asked as often.
Four of these nine cause almost every mistake, and they are the four whose sthayi bhav does not sound like the ras: Veer takes utsah, not veerta; Veebhats takes jugupsa, not bhay; Adbhut takes vismay; Shant takes nirved. Learn those four separately and the remaining five follow from the name itself — shok for karun, krodh for raudra, bhay for bhayanak, haas for hasya, rati for shringar.
Four extra facts finish the chapter.
Shringar has two divisions — Sanyog Shringar (संयोग), the joy of union, and Viyog or Vipralambh Shringar (वियोग / विप्रलंभ), the ache of separation. Shringar is also called Rasraj, the king of rasas, because it is the most widely used in Hindi poetry.
Bharatmuni counted only eight rasas. Shant Ras was not in his list; later acharyas, notably Udbhat and Abhinavgupta, established it as the ninth. So 'how many rasas did Bharatmuni accept' and 'how many rasas are there' have different answers — eight and nine — and papers exploit exactly that gap.
Vatsalya Ras (वात्सल्य), the love of a parent for a child, is treated as the tenth ras, with vatsal rati as its sthayi bhav; Acharya Vishwanath discussed it in Sahityadarpan. Bhakti Ras, with dev rati as its sthayi bhav, is counted by some as the eleventh.
For identification, read the situation, not the words: a battlefield vow is Veer, a description of a corpse or a battlefield after war is Veebhats, and a sage renouncing the world is Shant.
What exams actually ask
BPSC TRE-4 and Bihar STET Hindi — the direct match: 'the sthayi bhav of X ras is'. Veebhats and Shant are the two they favour, because bhay and shanti are the wrong answers that feel right.
CTET Hindi language — a short passage or a couplet followed by 'which ras is present here'. The trap is a verse full of angry words that is actually Veer, not Raudra: anger against a person is Raudra, zeal for a task or a fight is Veer.
SSC Hindi sections and Railway NTPC general Hindi — the counting questions. How many rasas, how many sanchari bhavs, how many did Bharatmuni accept. The gap between eight and nine is the whole question.
UP TET and other state TETs — the components: how many avayav does ras have, and which one is 'uddipan'. Students who learnt only the nine-ras table and skipped vibhav-anubhav lose this one.
Across all of them, Rasraj and the tenth ras appear as one-liners.
Points to Remember
• Ras = awakened sthayi bhav. Sutra by Bharatmuni in the Natyashastra.
• Four avayav: sthayi bhav, vibhav, anubhav, sanchari bhav.
• Vibhav splits into alamban (ashray + vishay) and uddipan.
• Sanchari/vyabhichari bhav = 33. Sattvik bhav = 8. Sthayi bhav = 9.
• Shringar–rati · Hasya–haas · Karun–shok · Raudra–krodh · Veer–utsah · Bhayanak–bhay · Veebhats–jugupsa · Adbhut–vismay · Shant–nirved.
• Bharatmuni accepted 8; Shant is the ninth, added later.
• Shringar = Rasraj, with sanyog and viyog (vipralambh) divisions.
• Vatsalya = tenth ras (vatsal rati); Bhakti = eleventh for some acharyas (dev rati).
⚠ Exam Tip 1: If the option list contains the ras name itself dressed up as a feeling — 'veerta' for Veer, 'shanti' for Shant — it is a plant. The sthayi bhav is never the ras name; it is utsah and nirved.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: For identification questions, ask who the emotion is aimed at. Anger at a person is Raudra; energy aimed at a task is Veer; revulsion at a thing is Veebhats. The words in the verse mislead, the target never does.
Ask a Hindi paper who wrote Padmavat and it wants one word. Ask which kaal Bihari belongs to and it wants one word again. The history of Hindi literature is examined almost entirely as matching — a name to a work, a work to a period, a period to the critic who named it — and that is exactly why it is scoring. There is nothing to derive and nothing to argue with.
Ramchandra Shukla's four-fold division, set out in Hindi Sahitya ka Itihas in 1929, is the one every paper follows: Adikal, Bhaktikal, Ritikal and Adhunik Kal. Learn those four boundaries first. A question that hands you a poet and asks for a period is unanswerable without them, while a question that hands you a period and asks for a poet turns into a short list you can recall. Everything else here — the branches, the dialects, the landmark works — hangs off that skeleton.
Adikal runs from about Samvat 1050 to 1375 and Shukla named it Veergatha Kaal, because the poetry that survives is court poetry praising warrior patrons. Other critics renamed the same stretch, and papers live off that disagreement: George Grierson called it Charan Kaal, Rahul Sankrityayan called it Siddha-Samant Kaal, Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi called it Beejvapan Kaal, and Hazari Prasad Dwivedi settled on the neutral Adikal.
The set-piece work is Prithviraj Raso by Chand Bardai, treated as the first mahakavya of Hindi even though its authenticity is still argued. Around it sit Khuman Raso, Bisaldev Raso, Hammir Raso and Parmal Raso. Two major names in the period are not veergatha at all: Vidyapati, whose Padavali is in Maithili, and Amir Khusro, remembered for his pahelis and mukariyan — the earliest playful Hindi anyone quotes.
Bhaktikal, roughly Samvat 1375 to 1700, is the golden age of Hindi literature — Grierson's phrase — and it splits into a clean two-by-two. Fix that grid and half the questions answer themselves.
Nirgun bhakti, worshipping a formless God, has two streams. The Gyanashrayi or Sant stream is led by Kabir, whose utterances were collected as Bijak, with Raidas, Guru Nanak and Dadu Dayal beside him. The Premashrayi or Sufi stream tells love-allegories in Awadhi: Malik Muhammad Jayasi's Padmavat, Kutuban's Mrigavati, Manjhan's Madhumalati, Usman's Chitravali.
Sagun bhakti, worshipping God with form, also has two. The Ram bhakti stream is Tulsidas — Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi, plus Vinay Patrika and Kavitavali. The Krishna bhakti stream writes in Brajbhasha: Surdas with Sursagar and Sahitya Lahari, Meerabai's padas, Nanddas and the other Ashtachhap poets of the Vallabh sect.
Ritikal, about Samvat 1700 to 1900, turns from devotion to craft — shringar ras, nayika-bhed and alankar. Mishrabandhu called it Alankrit Kaal and Vishwanath Prasad Mishra called it Shringar Kaal. Its poets fall in three drawers. Ritibaddha poets wrote to the rulebook: Keshavdas with Rasikpriya and Kavipriya, then Matiram, Dev and Padmakar. Bihari is ritisiddha — he wrote no rulebook, yet his Satsai of roughly 713 dohas obeys every convention. Ghananand, Bodha and Alam are ritimukt, free of it. Bhushan stands outside the mood altogether, writing veer ras for Shivaji in Shivraj Bhushan.
Adhunik Kal opens around 1850 AD and Shukla called it Gadya Kaal, because prose finally arrives. Bharatendu Harishchandra founds it; Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi's Saraswati and Maithilisharan Gupt's Bharat-Bharati carry the next phase; then Chhayavad's four pillars, Prasad, Nirala, Pant and Mahadevi Verma; then Agyeya's Tar Saptak in 1943.
BPSC TRE-4's Hindi concerned-subject paper for TGT and PGT posts asks this block head-on: name the poet of a work, place a poet in a kaal, or match a critic to the label he gave a period. Its favourite trap is exactly that last one — an option set reading Charan Kaal, Siddha-Samant Kaal, Beejvapan Kaal and Veergatha Kaal, where all four are genuine names for Adikal and only the critic named in the stem decides which is correct.
CTET and UP-TET keep it lighter inside their Hindi language papers: one recall item on Kabir, Tulsidas, Premchand or Bharatendu, usually wrapped in a classroom setting. UPSC's compulsory Hindi paper expects the same names in continuous prose.
The other recurring trap is dialect. Ramcharitmanas and Padmavat are Awadhi; Sursagar and Bihari's Satsai are Brajbhasha; Vidyapati's Padavali is Maithili. Papers swap Awadhi and Braj in the options far more often than they swap the poets.
• Shukla's four kaals: Adikal, Bhaktikal, Ritikal, Adhunik Kal.
• Adikal = Veergatha Kaal (Shukla) · Charan Kaal (Grierson) · Siddha-Samant Kaal (Rahul Sankrityayan) · Beejvapan Kaal (M. P. Dwivedi) · Adikal (Hazari Prasad Dwivedi).
• Prithviraj Raso — Chand Bardai, first mahakavya. Padavali — Vidyapati, Maithili. Pahelis and mukariyan — Amir Khusro.
• Bhaktikal 2x2 — Nirgun: Gyanashrayi (Kabir, Bijak), Premashrayi Sufi (Jayasi, Padmavat). Sagun: Ram bhakti (Tulsidas), Krishna bhakti (Surdas, Meera, Ashtachhap).
• Ritikal — Keshavdas ritibaddha, Bihari ritisiddha (Satsai, about 713 dohas), Ghananand ritimukt, Bhushan veer ras.
• Adhunik Kal — Bharatendu Harishchandra is its founder; Kamayani is Jaishankar Prasad's; Tar Saptak is 1943, edited by Agyeya.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: When the stem names a critic, answer with that critic's label and not the popular one — Grierson's answer is Charan Kaal even though the period is normally called Veergatha Kaal.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: Fix the dialect to the work, never to the poet. Tulsidas wrote Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi but Kavitavali in Brajbhasha, and that one fact settles a whole family of questions.
Most of Hindi grammar rewards memory. Chhand rewards arithmetic, and that makes it the friendliest question in the padya section — you do not have to have read the poem to answer it.
A chhand is a poem's metrical shape: how many syllables or beats a line carries and in what order. Two kinds exist. Matrik chhand is counted in matras, the beats. Varnik chhand is counted in varnas, the letters, and their order matters. Doha, soratha, chaupai and rola are matrik; indravajra, malini and savaiya are varnik.
A chhand question almost always asks one of three things: name the chhand shown, state the matras of a named chhand, or count the matras in a given charan. All three come out of the counting rules on the next card, so learn those properly and the rest of the topic follows without any memorising at all.
Four counting rules, and they settle almost everything.
One. A laghu syllable carries one matra: the short vowels अ, इ, उ, ऋ and any consonant sitting on them. Written as the sign ।
Two. A guru syllable carries two matras: the long vowels आ, ई, ऊ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ. Written as ऽ
Three. A syllable carrying anusvar (the dot, as in अंक) or visarg becomes guru. So does a laghu syllable standing immediately before a conjunct consonant, because the weight of the joint pulls back onto it.
Four, and this is the one papers exploit: anunasik, the chandrabindu as in हुँ, adds nothing. It nasalises the sound without lengthening it, so a laghu syllable stays laghu.
2. Thirteen. You have just identified the first charan of a doha without knowing the poem.
Varnik chhand counts letters, not beats, and it cares about the pattern of laghu and guru in threes. Those triples are the eight ganas, and all eight live inside one memory line:
Read it three letters at a time, starting from each gana's own name. य मा ता gives laghu-guru-guru, so यगण is ISS. Then मा ता रा — SSS, the मगण, all heavy. न स ल — III, नगण, all light. स ल गा — IIS, सगण. The trailing ल and गा are not ganas; they stand for a leftover laghu and guru.
Indravajra, upendravajra, malini and mandakranta are all defined by which ganas come in which order. Matrik chhand never uses ganas — only totals — and mixing the two systems is a common way to lose the mark.
The matrik chhands worth storing, each as a number pattern.
Doha — four charans; the first and third carry 13 matras, the second and fourth carry 11.
Soratha — the doha turned around: 11 in the first and third, 13 in the second and fourth. Nothing else changes, which is exactly why papers pair them.
Chaupai — 16 matras in every one of its four charans, all equal.
Rola — 24 matras a line, split 11 and 13.
Kundaliya — six charans: one doha followed by one rola, and the doha's last word opens the rola.
Barvai — 12 and 7.
Store them as pairs of numbers, not as definitions. The number is what the question asks for.
What exams actually ask. BPSC TRE-4 asks chhand in both places Hindi appears — the Part I language paper and the Part III subject paper for Hindi teachers — and the usual forms are 'identify the chhand', 'how many matras in a chaupai', and the gana sutra. CTET and the state TETs put it in the Hindi language section as a classroom item: which chhand is this line from the textbook written in. SSC CGL, CHSL and the RRB exams rarely ask the metre itself; when chhand appears there it is through authorship — who wrote in dohas, whose chaupais make up the Ramcharitmanas. UPSC's Hindi literature optional treats it properly, with varnik chhands named by their gana order.
Three traps repeat everywhere. Doha and soratha offered as each other, since only the order is reversed. Chaupai given as 15 matras instead of 16. And a chandrabindu counted as though it were an anusvar, which quietly adds one matra and turns a correct 13 into a wrong 14.
Points to Remember. Laghu is one matra, guru is two. Anusvar and visarg make a syllable guru; a laghu before a conjunct also turns guru; anunasik, the chandrabindu, adds nothing. Doha 13-11-13-11; soratha is the reverse, 11-13-11-13; chaupai 16 in each of four charans; rola 24 a line split 11 and 13; barvai 12 and 7; kundaliya is a doha plus a rola, six charans in all. Matrik chhand counts matras; varnik chhand counts varnas in gana order, and all eight ganas sit in यमाताराजभानसलगा — य ISS, म SSS, त SSI, र SIS, ज ISI, भ SII, न III, स IIS. Indravajra, malini and mandakranta are varnik; doha, soratha, chaupai and rola are matrik.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: On an identify-the-chhand question, count the first charan alone. Thirteen means doha, eleven means soratha, sixteen means chaupai — you rarely need the second line.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: Check every dot before you total. A bindu above the letter (अनुस्वार) makes it guru; a chandrabindu (अनुनासिक) does not. One misread dot is one wrong matra and one wrong chhand.

⚠ Exam Tip 1:
⚠ Exam Tip 2:
