Carbon has atomic number 6 and the configuration 2,4 — it can neither lose four electrons easily nor gain four. So it shares them. That single fact produces more than ten million known compounds, more than all the other elements put together. Two properties do the work: tetravalency, meaning four bonds always, and catenation, carbon linking to carbon in chains, branches and rings better than any other element manages.
For an exam this chapter is unusually generous. It is almost entirely formula-and-name recall. Three general formulas cover every hydrocarbon, six functional groups cover every named compound, and one naming rule converts a structure into its IUPAC name. SSC, Railway, BPSC TRE-4, CTET and UPSC prelims each draw one or two questions from here, and they are questions you either know in five seconds or lose. Learn the tables, not the theory.
Carbon bonds covalently — shared pairs, never ions. Because it needs exactly four bonds, one carbon can hold four hydrogens (CH₄, methane), or double-bond to another carbon, or triple-bond. Counting bonds settles several questions outright: ethane C₂H₆ has 7 covalent bonds (six C–H plus one C–C), ethene C₂H₄ has 6, ethyne C₂H₂ has 5.
Pure carbon exists as allotropes — one element, different structures, opposite properties.
• Diamond — each carbon bonded to four others in a rigid three-dimensional network. Hardest natural substance; does not conduct, because no electron is free.
• Graphite — each carbon bonded to only three others in flat hexagonal sheets. The fourth electron is free, so graphite conducts; the sheets slide over each other, so it is soft, used as a lubricant and in pencils.
• Fullerene (C₆₀) — sixty carbons in a hollow football-shaped cage, reported in 1985, named after the architect Buckminster Fuller.
Same element throughout. Structure decides everything.
A homologous series is a family of compounds sharing one functional group and one general formula, in which each member differs from the next by a –CH₂– group, that is by 14 u of molar mass.
Three hydrocarbon series carry most of the marks.
• Alkanes CₙH₂ₙ₊₂ — all single bonds, saturated. CH₄ methane, C₂H₆ ethane, C₃H₈ propane, C₄H₁₀ butane, C₅H₁₂ pentane.
• Alkenes CₙH₂ₙ — one C=C double bond, unsaturated, series begins at n = 2. C₂H₄ ethene, C₃H₆ propene.
• Alkynes CₙH₂ₙ₋₂ — one C≡C triple bond, series begins at n = 2. C₂H₂ ethyne, C₃H₄ propyne.
Worked example — the fourth member of the alkyne series. Alkynes start at n = 2, so the members are n = 2, 3, 4, 5; the fourth is C₅H₈, pentyne. A student who starts counting at n = 1 answers C₄H₆ and loses the mark.
Within a series, physical properties change gradually — boiling point rises with chain length — while chemical properties stay similar.
A functional group is the atom or group that decides how a compound behaves; the carbon chain merely carries it. Six cover the syllabus: alcohol –OH (suffix –ol), aldehyde –CHO (–al), ketone >C=O (–one), carboxylic acid –COOH (–oic acid), and the halogens –Cl and –Br as the prefixes chloro– and bromo–.
The naming rule: take the root from the carbon count (meth 1, eth 2, prop 3, but 4, pent 5), then add the suffix; if the suffix begins with a vowel, drop the final 'e' of 'ane'. So C₂H₅OH is ethane → ethan + ol = ethanol. CH₃CHO is ethanal. CH₃COOH is ethanoic acid.
Two compounds are asked by name almost every year. Ethanol (C₂H₅OH) boils at 78 °C and releases hydrogen with sodium. Ethanoic acid (CH₃COOH) is acetic acid — a 5–8% solution is vinegar, and pure acid freezes near 17 °C, which is why it is called glacial acetic acid.
Soap is the sodium salt of a fatty acid and fails in hard water, forming scum. Detergent does not.
What exams actually ask
SSC CGL and CHSL — general-formula questions, nearly always alkene versus alkyne. The trap is CₙH₂ₙ, which is also the formula of a cycloalkane, so 'which could be C₃H₆' has two defensible answers unless the paper specifies open chain. They also ask the number of covalent bonds in a named molecule.
Railway NTPC and Group D — allotropes, phrased as a property swap: 'which allotrope of carbon conducts electricity'. Diamond is famous, so it is the printed distractor; graphite is the answer, because of its one free electron per atom.
BPSC TRE-4 and Bihar STET science — the definition of a homologous series and the 14 u difference, plus IUPAC names of two-carbon compounds.
CTET Science — classroom-framed everyday chemistry: LPG is mainly butane, CNG mainly methane, ethyne is the welding gas.
UPSC prelims — fullerene as a nanomaterial, and soap versus detergent in hard water.
Points to Remember
• Carbon: atomic number 6, configuration 2,4, always tetravalent, always covalent.
• Catenation + tetravalency = over ten million compounds.
• Alkane CₙH₂ₙ₊₂ · Alkene CₙH₂ₙ · Alkyne CₙH₂ₙ₋₂. Alkenes and alkynes begin at n = 2.
• Successive homologues differ by –CH₂–, that is 14 u.
• Diamond: four bonds per carbon, hardest, non-conductor. Graphite: three bonds, soft, conductor. Fullerene C₆₀, reported 1985.
• –OH alcohol (–ol) · –CHO aldehyde (–al) · >C=O ketone (–one) · –COOH carboxylic acid (–oic acid).
• Ethanol C₂H₅OH · Ethanoic acid CH₃COOH = acetic acid; 5–8% = vinegar; glacial acetic acid freezes near 17 °C.
• Soap fails in hard water (scum); detergent does not.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: When a paper gives a formula and asks for the series, just subtract. H = 2C + 2 is an alkane, H = 2C an alkene, H = 2C − 2 an alkyne. Faster and safer than recalling names.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: Count members from n = 2 for alkenes and alkynes, not n = 1. That single off-by-one produces the most common wrong answer in this chapter.
The case: a monastery garden, 1856 to 1863
Gregor Johann Mendel was a monk teaching at Brno in what is now the Czech Republic. Over eight growing seasons he raised roughly twenty-eight thousand garden pea plants, Pisum sativum, and counted their offspring. He presented the work in 1865 and published it in 1866, and almost nobody read it. It was rediscovered independently in 1900 by three botanists — de Vries, Correns and Tschermak — and only then did Mendel become the Father of Genetics.
The choice of plant is itself an exam question. The pea has a short life cycle, produces many seeds, is naturally self-pollinating but can be cross-pollinated by hand, and shows seven traits that come in two clean, non-overlapping forms — tall or dwarf, round or wrinkled, with nothing in between. Blurred traits would have hidden the ratios. Mendel found them because he picked a plant that could not blur.
The monohybrid cross — where 3:1 comes from
Mendel crossed a pure tall plant (TT) with a pure dwarf one (tt). Every plant in the first generation, F1, was tall — the dwarf character had not been destroyed, only hidden. He called the visible one dominant and the hidden one recessive.
He then self-pollinated the F1. In F2 the dwarf plants reappeared, and the count came out close to three tall for every one dwarf. The reason is that each F1 plant is Tt, so its gametes are half T and half t. Combining them gives TT, Tt, Tt and tt in equal numbers.
That single square holds both famous ratios. By appearance: three tall to one dwarf, 3:1, the phenotypic ratio. By genetic make-up: one TT, two Tt, one tt, that is 1:2:1, the genotypic ratio. Same cross, same four boxes, two different questions — and papers ask which ratio you were given far more often than they ask for the ratio itself.
The dihybrid cross and Mendel's three laws
Tracking two traits at once — round yellow seeds crossed with wrinkled green — gives an F2 ratio of 9 : 3 : 3 : 1. Nine show both dominant characters, three show the first dominant with the second recessive, three the reverse, and one shows both recessive. The two middle groups are the interesting part: they are combinations that neither parent had, which is why the traits must be inherited independently rather than as a package.
From this Mendel drew three laws. The Law of Dominance — in a hybrid, only the dominant character appears. The Law of Segregation — the two factors of a pair separate during gamete formation, so a gamete carries only one; this is the one law with no known exception, which is why it is also called the law of purity of gametes. The Law of Independent Assortment — the factors for different traits assort independently, which is precisely what 9:3:3:1 demonstrates.
A test cross checks a doubtful plant: cross it with the homozygous recessive. Offspring all tall means TT; a 1:1 split means Tt.
Human inheritance — sex, and what goes wrong
A human cell carries 46 chromosomes, that is 23 pairs: 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes. A female is XX, a male is XY. The mother's egg therefore always carries an X. The father's sperm carries either an X or a Y, and that single choice decides the outcome — X gives a girl, Y gives a boy. The probability is fifty-fifty at every pregnancy, and the mother contributes nothing to the decision. In a country where women are still blamed for the sex of a child, this is the most socially useful fact in the chapter.
Some disorders ride on the X chromosome. Haemophilia and red-green colour blindness are X-linked recessive, so they are far commoner in males, who have only one X and no second copy to mask the faulty gene. Sickle cell anaemia and thalassaemia are autosomal recessive and affect both sexes equally. Down syndrome is different again — not a single faulty gene but an extra copy of chromosome 21, giving 47 chromosomes in all.
What exams actually ask
SSC CGL and CHSL — the ratios, asked in a way that makes you choose between them. 'The genotypic ratio of a monohybrid cross is —' has 3:1 sitting in the options as the printed distractor, because 3:1 is the number everyone memorises. Read whether the stem says genotypic or phenotypic before you look at the options.
Railway NTPC and Group D — Mendel's plant and his title. The trap is Drosophila, the fruit fly, which is famous in genetics but belongs to Morgan's work, not Mendel's.
BPSC TRE-4 and Bihar STET science — the three laws by name, the test cross, and human chromosome counts. Note the difference between 46 chromosomes and 23 pairs; a question asking for pairs offers 46 as the trap and vice versa.
CTET science — classroom-framed items on why the father determines the sex of a child, and on visible inherited traits.
UPSC prelims — X-linked disorders, and genetic terms such as allele, genotype and phenotype used inside a health or biotechnology question.
Points to Remember
• Mendel — garden pea Pisum sativum, 1856–1863, seven pairs of contrasting traits, Father of Genetics. Rediscovered 1900.
• The term 'genetics' was coined by Bateson in 1906; 'gene' by Johannsen in 1909.
• Monohybrid F2 — phenotypic 3:1, genotypic 1:2:1. Dihybrid F2 — 9:3:3:1.
• Three laws: Dominance, Segregation, Independent Assortment. Segregation has no known exception.
• Test cross = cross with the homozygous recessive. A 1:1 result means the unknown parent was heterozygous.
• Humans — 46 chromosomes, 23 pairs, 22 autosome pairs + XX or XY. Egg always X.
• X-linked recessive: haemophilia, red-green colour blindness — commoner in males. Autosomal recessive: sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia.
• Down syndrome = trisomy 21, total 47 chromosomes.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: Underline the word 'genotypic' or 'phenotypic' in the stem before reading the options. Both ratios come from the same four boxes, so both will be printed, and the stem is the only thing that separates them.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: Sex is decided by the sperm, never the egg. Any option that gives the mother a role in determining the sex of a child is wrong by definition, because every egg carries X.
Life processes are the four jobs every living body must do to stay alive: take in food, release energy from it, move things around inside, and throw out what is left over. Exam papers love this chapter because it is full of pairs that sound alike and mean different things — breathing and respiration, artery and vein, xylem and phloem, nephron and neuron. Almost every mark lost here is lost to a mix-up, not to ignorance.
The way through it is to ask one question of every structure: what goes in, and what comes out? A nephron takes in blood and puts out urine. An alveolus takes in air and puts out carbon dioxide. Phloem takes in the sugar made in the leaf and delivers it wherever the plant is growing. Once each part has a clear input and a clear output, the pairs stop swapping places in your memory.
Breathing and respiration are not the same thing. Breathing is the physical movement of air in and out of the lungs; respiration is the chemical release of energy from glucose inside the cell. You can hold your breath, but you cannot hold your respiration.
Aerobic respiration: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy, about 38 ATP per glucose molecule. It begins with glycolysis in the cytoplasm, which splits glucose into pyruvate; the rest happens inside the mitochondrion, which is why the mitochondrion is called the powerhouse of the cell.
Without oxygen the pathway changes, and the product tells you which organism you are looking at. Yeast makes ethanol and carbon dioxide — that is fermentation, and it is why bread rises. Human muscle makes lactic acid, which is the ache you feel after sprinting. Both release far less energy: roughly 2 ATP instead of 38.
Air travels nostrils → pharynx → larynx → trachea → bronchi → bronchioles → alveoli. The trachea is held open by C-shaped rings of cartilage, which is why it does not collapse when you inhale sharply. The roughly 300 million alveoli give the lungs a gas-exchange surface of about 80 square metres — a tennis court folded into the chest. Oxygen is carried by haemoglobin in the red blood cells; most carbon dioxide travels dissolved in plasma as bicarbonate.
Human circulation is double circulation: blood passes through the four-chambered heart twice in one complete round. Arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins bring it back, and there is exactly one famous exception each way — the pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs, and the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood back. Veins have valves to stop backflow; arteries do not need them because the pressure is high.
In plants, xylem carries water and minerals upward only, pulled by transpiration from the leaves; phloem translocates food in both directions and needs energy to do it. One-way and passive versus two-way and active — that single contrast answers most plant-transport questions.
Excretion in humans is the kidney's work. The filtering unit is the nephron, about a million per kidney — not the neuron, which is a nerve cell. Blood is forced through the glomerulus inside Bowman's capsule; useful glucose, amino acids and most of the water are reabsorbed, and the rest leaves as urine through ureter → bladder → urethra. Roughly 180 litres are filtered a day and only about 1.5 litres leave the body.
Humans excrete urea and are called ureotelic; most fish release ammonia and are ammonotelic; birds and reptiles release uric acid and are uricotelic, which saves them water.
What exams actually ask. BPSC TRE-4's general science section asks the plain identifications: which organ, which unit, which product.
SSC CGL and CHSL run the same content as one-liners and lean hard on the exception pairs — the pulmonary artery question appears again and again, as does "basic filtration unit of the kidney", where "neuron" sits in the options purely to catch a fast reader. Railway NTPC and Group D prefer numbers: chambers of the heart, ATP per glucose molecule, nephrons per kidney.
CTET and the state TETs keep it classroom-framed — a labelled diagram of the human respiratory system, or a question asking why a runner's legs ache after a race. UPSC prelims rarely asks the plain fact and prefers a statement set in which one line quietly swaps xylem for phloem.
Two traps repeat everywhere: calling breathing "respiration", and assuming every artery carries oxygenated blood.
Points to Remember
• Breathing = physical exchange of gases; respiration = chemical release of energy inside the cell.
• Aerobic → about 38 ATP; anaerobic → about 2 ATP. Glycolysis in the cytoplasm, the rest in the mitochondrion.
• Yeast without oxygen → ethanol + CO₂. Human muscle without oxygen → lactic acid.
• Trachea held open by C-shaped cartilage rings; about 300 million alveoli; oxygen carried by haemoglobin.
• Double circulation, four chambers. Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood; pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood. Veins have valves.
• Xylem: water and minerals, upward, passive. Phloem: food, both directions, uses energy.
• Nephron is the kidney's filtering unit — about a million per kidney. Around 180 L filtered, about 1.5 L of urine.
• Humans ureotelic (urea), most fish ammonotelic (ammonia), birds and reptiles uricotelic (uric acid).
⚠ Exam Tip 1: When an option says "neuron" in a kidney question, or claims that arteries always carry oxygenated blood, that option was written for the student who is reading fast. Slow down for exactly those two words.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: If a question names the nitrogenous waste, it is really asking about the animal group — ammonia points to an aquatic animal, uric acid to a bird or reptile, urea to a mammal. Answer from the waste product, not from the animal's name.
Take the duct away from a gland and you have an endocrine gland: it releases its secretion straight into the blood, which then carries it everywhere. Salivary glands and sweat glands keep their ducts and stay exocrine. The pancreas and the gonads do both jobs at once, which is why they are called mixed or heterocrine glands and why they turn up in so many questions.
Hormones themselves are chemical messengers. The body needs them in tiny amounts, destroys them after use and must keep making fresh supply — so a gland that stops working shows up as a disease very quickly. The word hormone was coined by Bayliss and Starling, and the first hormone ever identified was secretin.
Almost nothing in this topic can be worked out. Every mark comes from three linked columns: the gland, the hormone it releases, and the disorder that appears when it releases too little or too much.
The pituitary sits at the base of the brain and is called the master gland because its secretions switch other glands on. It is also the smallest endocrine gland, roughly the size of a pea. Growth hormone is the part papers ask about: too little in childhood gives dwarfism, too much in childhood gives gigantism, and too much after growth has stopped gives acromegaly — the jaw, hands and feet thicken. From the posterior lobe come ADH, also called vasopressin, whose shortage causes diabetes insipidus, and oxytocin, the hormone of childbirth and milk ejection. The pituitary is itself controlled by the hypothalamus.
The thyroid, in the neck, is the largest endocrine gland. Its thyroxine needs iodine, so an iodine shortage swells the gland into goitre. A childhood deficiency causes cretinism, an adult deficiency causes myxoedema, and an excess causes Graves' disease. The thyroid also makes calcitonin, which lowers blood calcium.
The parathyroid glands — four of them, embedded behind the thyroid — secrete parathormone, which raises blood calcium. That is the exact opposite of calcitonin, and the pair is a favourite question. Too little parathormone drops calcium and causes tetany, the muscular cramp papers describe without naming.
The adrenal glands sit like caps on top of the kidneys. Their outer cortex makes cortisol and aldosterone, and its failure causes Addison's disease. Their inner medulla makes adrenaline, the emergency or fight-or-flight hormone, which lifts heart rate, blood pressure and blood sugar within seconds.
The pancreas is the classic mixed gland. Inside it the Islets of Langerhans hold beta cells, which release insulin to lower blood glucose, and alpha cells, which release glucagon to raise it. Failure of insulin causes diabetes mellitus. Insulin was isolated by Banting and Best in 1921 — a one-line question that appears again and again.
Three smaller glands complete the list. The thymus, behind the breastbone, secretes thymosin and trains the immune system; it is large in a child and shrinks after puberty, and that shrinking is itself asked. The pineal gland deep in the brain secretes melatonin and sets the sleep–wake cycle. The gonads are the other mixed glands: the testes make testosterone from their Leydig cells, while the ovaries make oestrogen and progesterone — progesterone is the pregnancy hormone, released by the corpus luteum.
Two patterns tie the whole topic together. First, hormones usually work in opposing pairs — insulin against glucagon, calcitonin against parathormone — so learning one gives you the other for free. Second, deficiency diseases are named after the gland's failure, not after the symptom. The moment a question names a disorder, ask which gland stopped working before you even read the options.
SSC CGL, SSC CHSL and the RRB NTPC general-science sections ask this as straight one-line recall: which gland is the master gland, which hormone controls blood sugar, which deficiency causes goitre. BPSC TRE-4 asks the same facts in its general studies section and again, in more detail, in the science concerned-subject paper for TGT and PGT posts — there the stem usually names the disorder and expects the gland.
The trap they reuse most is the two diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is an insulin problem in the pancreas; diabetes insipidus is an ADH problem in the pituitary. Both are almost always in the same option set, and only the second word separates them.
The second trap is the thyroxine ladder. Goitre, cretinism and myxoedema are three different answers to three different stems, and papers rotate which one they ask. CTET and UP-TET keep the whole topic to a single recall item in the science section.
• Endocrine = ductless, secretes into blood. Exocrine = has ducts. Pancreas and gonads are mixed glands.
• Pituitary = master gland and smallest endocrine gland. Thyroid = largest endocrine gland. Hypothalamus controls the pituitary.
• Growth hormone: dwarfism (low, childhood), gigantism (high, childhood), acromegaly (high, adult). ADH shortage → diabetes insipidus. Oxytocin → childbirth and milk ejection.
• Thyroxine needs iodine → goitre. Cretinism in children, myxoedema in adults, Graves' disease in excess. Calcitonin lowers blood calcium.
• Parathormone raises blood calcium; its shortage causes tetany.
• Adrenal cortex → cortisol and aldosterone; failure gives Addison's disease. Adrenal medulla → adrenaline, the emergency hormone.
• Insulin from beta cells lowers blood sugar, glucagon from alpha cells raises it. Banting and Best, 1921.
• Thymus → thymosin, shrinks after puberty. Pineal → melatonin. Testes → testosterone. Ovaries → oestrogen and progesterone.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: Read the second word in 'diabetes'. Mellitus is pancreas and insulin; insipidus is pituitary and ADH. The option set almost always contains both.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: When a stem names an age — 'in children', 'in adults' — it is testing the thyroxine or growth-hormone ladder. Cretinism and gigantism are the childhood answers; myxoedema and acromegaly are the adult ones.
Environment and ecology give up the cheapest marks in the general science section. Every paper carries two or three of them, the facts do not change from year to year, and nothing here needs a formula. Students still lose these marks, and for a specific reason: the chapter is taught as vocabulary and tested as relationships.
Knowing that a frog is a carnivore earns nothing. The question asks which trophic level the frog occupies, how much of the grass's energy has reached it by then, and what happens to the whole chain if the frogs are removed. Those are three different questions built on one diagram.
So learn this chapter as a set of connected chains rather than a glossary. Four things do almost all the work: who eats whom, how much energy survives each step, how the same atoms cycle back through soil and air, and what happens when a substance enters the chain that nothing can break down. The last of those gives the two cases papers return to again and again.
An ecosystem has two halves. The abiotic half is the non-living setting — light, temperature, water, soil, minerals. The biotic half has three roles, and the roles matter more than the species names.
Producers (green plants, algae) make their own food by photosynthesis and are called autotrophs. Consumers cannot, and rank by what they eat: primary consumers are herbivores, secondary consumers eat the herbivores, tertiary consumers eat those. Decomposers — bacteria and fungi, also called saprophytes — break dead matter down and return the minerals to the soil. Remove the decomposers and the cycle stops; nutrients would stay locked in corpses.
A food chain is one straight line of who eats whom: grass → grasshopper → frog → snake → hawk. A food web is the realistic picture, many chains crossing, because most animals eat more than one thing.
Two chain types are named. A grazing chain starts at a living green plant. A detritus chain starts at dead organic matter and runs through decomposers.
Energy enters an ecosystem once, as sunlight, and leaves as heat. It never cycles. Green plants capture only about 1% of the sunlight falling on their leaves, and after that the losses are steady.
The 10% law, credited to Raymond Lindeman, states that roughly 10% of the energy at one trophic level passes to the next. The other 90% goes into respiration, movement and heat, or is simply never eaten. If grass holds 10,000 J, the grasshoppers get about 1,000 J, the frogs about 100 J, the snakes about 10 J.
That single number explains why food chains are short. After four or five links there is nothing left to support another predator, which is also why large carnivores are always few.
Ecological pyramids display this. The pyramid of energy is always upright, without exception, because energy only decreases upwards. The pyramid of numbers can be inverted — one large tree supporting thousands of insects. The pyramid of biomass is inverted in the sea, where the phytoplankton present at any moment weigh less than the zooplankton feeding on them.
Matter, unlike energy, does cycle. In the carbon cycle, photosynthesis pulls CO₂ out of air, respiration, decomposition and burning put it back. In the nitrogen cycle, four bacterial jobs are named separately and are asked separately:
• Fixation — Rhizobium in the root nodules of legumes; Azotobacter free in soil; cyanobacteria such as Nostoc.
• Nitrification — Nitrosomonas turns ammonia into nitrite, Nitrobacter turns nitrite into nitrate.
• Denitrification — Pseudomonas returns nitrate to atmospheric nitrogen.
Then the failure case. DDT, sprayed as a pesticide, resists breakdown, so it is not lost at each step the way energy is — it accumulates. Concentration therefore rises up the chain and is highest in top carnivores. This is biomagnification, and it thinned the eggshells of fish-eating birds badly enough to become the standard textbook example.
The second case is the ozone layer: O₃ in the stratosphere absorbs ultraviolet radiation. Chlorine released from CFCs destroys it, the thinning over Antarctica was reported in 1985, and the Montreal Protocol of 1987 phased the CFCs out.
SSC CGL, CHSL and MTS ask this material as one-line general science items, and the standing trap is the trophic-level count: 'secondary consumer' is the label, but that animal sits at the third trophic level, because the producers are level one. The two numbers differ by one and the paper always offers both.
RRB NTPC and Group D favour the named bacteria and the protocol years, and their favourite confusion is Nitrosomonas against Rhizobium — nitrification is not fixation.
BPSC TRE-4 asks general science across the paper, and environment questions there stay at the level a teacher must be able to draw on a board: the chain, the pyramid, the cycle.
CTET and the state TETs put the same content into classroom framing — reading an energy-flow diagram, or judging which food-chain example a lesson should use.
UPSC prelims goes deeper on the same base: which pyramid can invert and why, and which international agreement covers which pollutant. Confusing the Montreal Protocol with the Kyoto Protocol is the mistake it punishes most.
RRB NTPC
Points to Remember
• Energy flows one way and is lost as heat; matter cycles. Never say the energy cycles.
• Producers capture about 1% of incident sunlight; about 10% then crosses each trophic level (Lindeman's 10% law).
• Chains stop at four or five links because so little energy survives that far.
• Producers are trophic level 1. A secondary consumer is therefore at trophic level 3.
• Pyramid of energy: always upright. Pyramid of numbers: can invert (a tree and its insects). Pyramid of biomass: inverted in the sea.
• Nitrogen bacteria by job — Rhizobium fixes, Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter nitrify, Pseudomonas denitrifies.
• Ozone is O₃ in the stratosphere; CFCs destroy it; Montreal Protocol, 1987.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: When a question names an animal, count its trophic level from the producer rather than trusting the consumer label. 'Secondary consumer, third trophic level' describes one animal, and both numbers will be sitting in the options.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: Keep the protocols apart by their pollutant. Montreal, 1987, is ozone and CFCs. Kyoto, 1997, is greenhouse gases. Basel is hazardous waste. The years alone will not save you; the pollutant will.
In 1820 a Danish teacher named Hans Christian Oersted was showing a circuit to his class when the compass needle lying on the table twitched. That twitch ended two thousand years of treating electricity and magnetism as two separate subjects. Eleven years later Michael Faraday ran the experiment backwards: he moved a magnet inside a coil and got a current out of nothing but motion.
Those two sentences are the entire chapter, and between them they generate almost every unit of electricity in India. A current makes a magnetic field — that is the electromagnet, the electric bell, the motor. A changing magnetic field makes a current — that is the generator in every thermal and hydel plant, and the transformer on the pole outside your house.
Examiners love this pair precisely because the two directions are so easy to swap. Get the direction right and forty scattered facts collapse into four devices.
A magnetic field is drawn with field lines, and the exam tests the drawing more often than the physics. Outside a magnet the lines run from North to South; inside the magnet they run South to North, so every line is a closed loop. Lines never cross — if they did, a compass placed there would have to point two ways at once. Where the lines crowd together the field is strong; where they spread out it is weak.
Around a straight current-carrying wire the lines are concentric circles. Point your right thumb along the current and your curled fingers give the field: the right-hand thumb rule. Coil that wire into a solenoid and those circles add up into a bar magnet, with a nearly uniform field inside.
Put a core inside the solenoid and you have an electromagnet. The core must be soft iron, because soft iron magnetises strongly and lets go the instant the current stops. Steel holds on to its magnetism, which is exactly why permanent magnets are steel and electromagnets never are.
Now turn it around. A wire carrying current, placed inside an external magnetic field, feels a force. The force is largest when the current runs perpendicular to the field and falls to zero when it runs parallel to it; at right angles the magnitude is F = BIL.
Fleming's left-hand rule gives the direction. Stretch the first three fingers of your left hand mutually perpendicular: the ForeFinger is the Field, the Centre finger is the Current, and the ThuMb is the Motion. The mnemonic that survives an exam hall is FBI on thumb, forefinger, middle — Force, B for field, I for current.
That force is the electric motor, which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. A plain coil would swing half a turn and stop, because after half a rotation the force would push it back. A split-ring commutator flips the current in the coil every half rotation, so the push always arrives in the same rotational direction. Left hand for the motor — the L is in both words.
Faraday's induction runs the other way. Move a magnet near a coil, or the coil near the magnet, and an emf appears across the coil. Only the change counts: hold the magnet still inside the coil and the current dies at once. The size of the induced emf depends on how fast the magnetic flux changes, and Lenz's law fixes its direction — the induced current always opposes the change that produced it, which is energy conservation wearing a different hat.
Fleming's right-hand rule gives the generator direction. Right hand for the generator, left hand for the motor. An AC generator takes its output through two slip rings; a DC generator uses a split-ring commutator instead.
A transformer is two coils on one core, coupled by mutual induction, so it works on alternating current only — feed it DC and nothing changes, so nothing is induced. Turns and voltage move together: Vs/Vp = Ns/Np. Step the voltage up and the current steps down, because a coil cannot manufacture power.
BPSC TRE-4 asks this in Part II General Studies and again in the science paper at the middle and secondary levels. SSC CGL, CHSL and MTS place it in General Awareness. Railway NTPC and Group D ask the device questions in almost every shift. CTET frames it as a classroom situation — what will the child observe when a compass is brought near the wire.
The traps repeat, year after year. (1) Left hand and right hand are swapped in the options: motor is left, generator is right. (2) A transformer is offered as working on DC. (3) The electromagnet core is offered as steel. (4) The field lines inside the magnet are given as North to South. (5) The fuse is placed in the neutral wire instead of the live wire. (6) 'A step-up transformer increases power' — it increases voltage only, and the current falls to match.
Any option that names a direction, a hand, or a material deserves a second reading. That is where the mark goes.
Points to Remember. Oersted, 1820 — a current produces a magnetic field. Faraday, 1831 — a changing field produces a current. Field lines: North to South outside, South to North inside, never intersecting, crowded means strong. Right-hand thumb rule for the field around a straight wire. Fleming's left hand = motor; Fleming's right hand = generator. Split-ring commutator = DC; two slip rings = AC. Electromagnet core = soft iron; permanent magnet = steel. Transformer: mutual induction, AC only, Vs/Vp = Ns/Np, step-up raises voltage and lowers current. Domestic supply in India: 220 V, 50 Hz. Live wire red or brown, neutral black or blue, earth green; the fuse always sits in the live wire, and the earth wire protects against a metal body going live.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: Motor and generator both contain a coil, a magnet and rings — the only reliable separator inside an option is which hand rule is named. Left for motor, right for generator.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: If an option says a transformer changes the frequency, works on DC, or increases power, it is wrong. A transformer changes voltage and current, and only on AC.
⚠ Exam Tip 1:
⚠ Exam Tip 2:
A single cell can do everything a cell needs to do. The moment an organism gets large, that stops being efficient — so cells specialise, and a group of similar cells doing one job together is a tissue. Xavier Bichat named them, and the study of tissues, histology, still runs on his idea.
Why this chapter earns its place in every general-science paper: it is the cheapest possible source of one-line questions. Which tissue joins muscle to bone? Which muscle is striated but not under your control? Which plant tissue is dead but load-bearing? Each has exactly one answer, no calculation, no ambiguity.
The whole chapter is a sorting exercise. Plants have two families of tissue, animals have four, and almost every question asks you to place one item in the right box.
Plant tissues split into two families. Meristematic tissue is the dividing tissue: thin cellulose walls, dense cytoplasm, prominent nuclei, no vacuoles and no gaps between cells. Apical meristem sits at root and shoot tips and increases length. Lateral meristem, the cambium, sits along the sides and increases girth. Intercalary meristem sits at the base of leaves and internodes, which is why a grazed lawn and a cut grass field grow straight back.
Permanent tissue is what meristem becomes once it stops dividing. Simple permanent tissue has one cell type. Parenchyma is the living packing and storage tissue; with chloroplasts it becomes chlorenchyma and photosynthesises, and with large air cavities it becomes aerenchyma, which is what floats a water hyacinth. Collenchyma is living and thickened at the corners, giving flexibility to leaf stalks and climbing stems. Sclerenchyma is dead and lignified — the hardness of a coconut husk and the strength of jute fibre.
Complex permanent tissue has more than one cell type working as a unit, and there are exactly two: xylem and phloem.
Xylem carries water and dissolved minerals upward, from root to leaf, in one direction only. It has four components — tracheids, vessels, xylem parenchyma and xylem fibres — and all of them are dead except xylem parenchyma. That is the point of xylem: hollow dead tubes make better pipes than living cells.
Phloem carries prepared food, and it moves both ways, since food travels from leaf to root in summer and out of storage in spring. Its four components are sieve tubes, companion cells, phloem parenchyma and phloem fibres — and all of them are living except phloem fibres. So the two tissues are exact mirror images: xylem is dead with one living part, phloem is living with one dead part. Examiners have built questions on that single sentence for forty years.
Animal tissues are four, and every one of the hundreds of tissues in your body belongs to one of them.
Epithelial tissue covers and lines. Squamous epithelium is flat and thin, lining the mouth, oesophagus and the alveoli where diffusion must be fast. Cuboidal epithelium lines kidney tubules and gland ducts. Columnar epithelium lines the intestine, where absorption needs height; add cilia and it lines the respiratory tract, sweeping mucus upward.
Connective tissue has few cells and a great deal of matrix, and the matrix decides everything. Areolar fills spaces, adipose stores fat, bone has a hard matrix of calcium and phosphorus, cartilage a softer one of proteins and sugars, and blood a fluid matrix called plasma — which is exactly why blood is a connective tissue.
Muscular tissue contracts: skeletal is striated and voluntary, smooth is unstriated and involuntary, cardiac is striated and involuntary. Nervous tissue conducts impulses through the neuron, the longest cell in the body.
What exams actually ask. SSC CGL, CHSL and MTS put one or two general-science items on tissues in most shifts, and they are nearly always a category question: name the connective tissue, name the involuntary striated muscle, name the tissue joining bone to bone.
RRB NTPC and Group D ask the same set, with a preference for xylem and phloem — which one carries water, which direction, which component is dead.
CTET Paper II science and the state TETs ask it at the level the school textbook uses: types of meristem, why grass regrows after cutting, why a coconut husk is hard. BPSC TRE-4's Part II General Science covers the same ground.
The three traps that repeat everywhere: tendon and ligament get swapped, blood is not recognised as connective tissue because it is a liquid, and cardiac muscle is called voluntary because it is striated. Striation and control are two separate properties, and only cardiac muscle separates them.
Points to Remember. Meristem divides; apical adds length, lateral cambium adds girth, intercalary regrows cut grass.
Parenchyma stores, collenchyma bends, sclerenchyma is dead and hard. Chlorenchyma is parenchyma with chloroplasts; aerenchyma is parenchyma with air cavities.
Xylem: water, upward only, all components dead except xylem parenchyma. Phloem: food, both directions, all components living except phloem fibres.
Four animal tissues: epithelial, connective, muscular, nervous. Blood, bone, cartilage, tendon, ligament and adipose are all connective.
Tendon joins muscle to bone and barely stretches. Ligament joins bone to bone and is elastic.
Skeletal muscle: striated, voluntary. Smooth: unstriated, involuntary. Cardiac: striated, involuntary, found only in the heart.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: If a question names a body part and asks for its tissue type, check the matrix first. Anything with a lot of matrix and few cells is connective, whatever its state — solid bone, gel-like cartilage or liquid blood.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: Learn xylem and phloem as one pair, never separately. Xylem is dead with one living exception; phloem is living with one dead exception. Half the questions here are simply that sentence read backwards.
Fossil Fuels: Sunlight Stored Underground
Coal, petroleum and natural gas are called fossil fuels because they formed from the remains of plants and tiny sea organisms buried millions of years ago. Heat from the Earth and heavy pressure slowly converted that buried matter into carbon-rich fuels. They are non-renewable: we burn them in decades, but they need millions of years to form. Burning them releases carbon dioxide, and coal and diesel also release sulphur dioxide and soot, which is why they dominate air-pollution questions. Yet they supply most of the world's energy, run transport and give raw material for plastics, fertilisers and medicines. Exams ask the stages of coal, the order of petroleum fractions, what LPG and CNG contain and what 'octane number' means. All four are covered in these cards.
Coal: The Four Ranks and Destructive Distillation
Coal forms in stages as buried plant matter loses water and gases and its carbon percentage rises: peat (about 50–60% carbon), then lignite (about 60–70%), then bituminous (about 70–85%), then anthracite (about 90% or more). Higher rank means higher calorific value, harder coal and less smoke. Anthracite is the best; bituminous is the commonest industrial coal; peat is only the first step and is not yet true coal.
When coal is heated strongly in the absence of air, the process is called destructive distillation. It gives four products: coke (almost pure carbon, used to reduce iron ore in blast furnaces), coal tar (source of benzene, naphthalene and dyes), coal gas (a fuel gas) and ammoniacal liquor. Example: if asked which product is almost pure carbon, the answer is coke, not coal tar.
Petroleum: Fractional Distillation by Boiling Point
Crude petroleum is a dark mixture of hundreds of hydrocarbons. A refinery heats it and sends the vapour up a tall column that is hot at the bottom and cooler at the top. Each component condenses at the level where the temperature matches its boiling point, which is why the process is called fractional distillation. Small molecules with low boiling points rise highest; large molecules stay near the bottom.
Fractions from top to bottom: refinery gas (LPG), petrol, naphtha, kerosene, diesel, lubricating oil, paraffin wax, bitumen. Remember the logic: lighter and more volatile on top, heavier and thicker below. Uses: LPG for cooking, petrol for cars, kerosene for stoves and aircraft fuel, diesel for trucks and trains, wax for candles, bitumen for road surfacing. Petroleum is called 'black gold' and coal 'black diamond'.
LPG, CNG, Natural Gas and the Octane Number
Natural gas is mainly methane. Compressed to high pressure for vehicles it is CNG, which burns cleanly and is lighter than air. LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) is a mixture of propane and butane, stored as a liquid under moderate pressure in cylinders. Because LPG is odourless, a smelly chemical called ethyl mercaptan is added so that leaks are noticed. Biogas from cow dung is also mostly methane (about 55–65%).
Worked example on knocking: petrol sometimes burns too early in the engine and causes a metallic 'knock'. The octane number measures resistance to knocking: iso-octane is given 100 and n-heptane 0. A petrol of octane number 91 behaves like a blend of 91% iso-octane and 9% n-heptane. Diesel quality is measured by the cetane number, not octane. Tetraethyl lead was once added to raise octane, but it is now banned because of lead pollution.
LPG, CNG,
What Exams Actually Ask
SSC CGL, CHSL and MTS general-science papers and Railway Group D and NTPC ask direct one-liners: which coal has the highest carbon content (anthracite), the main constituent of CNG (methane), what LPG is a mixture of (propane and butane), and what destructive distillation of coal gives. UPSC prelims frames the same ideas around fossil-fuel pollution and cleaner fuels. BPSC TRE-4 science items and CTET science papers, framed as a teacher explaining fuels to a class, test the same facts.
Traps: (1) lignite or peat placed above anthracite on the rank ladder; (2) 'LPG is methane' (that is CNG); (3) octane number applied to diesel; (4) fractions listed in the wrong order, usually kerosene above petrol; (5) coke called a natural fuel when it is made from coal; (6) fractional distillation confused with destructive distillation.
Points to Remember
Coal ranks: peat, lignite, bituminous, anthracite (carbon rises at each step).
Destructive distillation (no air): coke, coal tar, coal gas, ammoniacal liquor.
Petroleum uses fractional distillation; top to bottom: LPG, petrol, naphtha, kerosene, diesel, lubricating oil, wax, bitumen.

Fossil fuels are non-renewable and release CO₂.
Petroleum is 'black gold'; coal is 'black diamond'.
⚠ Exam Tip 1: In any coal-ranking question, more carbon and less moisture means better coal, so the answer is always anthracite.
⚠ Exam Tip 2: 'Fractional' belongs to petroleum and 'destructive' belongs to coal; swapping these two words is a favourite wrong option.

⚠ Exam Tip 1:
⚠ Exam Tip 2: '
