Why This Timeline Decides Marks
India was not conquered in one battle. A trading company slowly turned into a ruler through a chain of wars, treaties and clever alliances, and every link in that chain is a favourite exam item. Questions rarely ask for a story; they ask for a year, a treaty name, a Governor-General or the loser of a particular battle. The trap is that the names sound alike: Treaty of Madras, Treaty of Mangalore, Treaty of Seringapatam. This short walks the whole chain in order: first the European companies and their rivalry, then the Carnatic Wars against the French, then Bengal (Plassey 1757 and Buxar 1764), and finally the Mysore, Maratha and Sikh wars. If you can say who fought whom, in which year, and which treaty ended it, you can answer almost every question on this chapter without guessing.
1. In which year was the Battle of Buxar fought?
2. By the Treaty of Allahabad (1765), the Company obtained the diwani of which regions?
3. Tipu Sultan was killed in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1799) when which Governor-General was in office?
4. The Battle of Wandiwash (1760) was fought between which two powers?
5. Which Indian state was the first to accept Wellesley's Subsidiary Alliance (1798)?
6. The Third Anglo-Mysore War (1790 to 1792) was ended by which treaty?
7. Which European trading company was formed last among those that came to India?
8. The Treaty of Salbai (1782) ended which war?
