Art and culture is a fixed slice of every general awareness paper, and it is the slice candidates most often abandon. The reason is that it looks bottomless — hundreds of temples, dozens of dances, centuries of painting.
It is not bottomless. Examiners draw from four short lists that have barely changed in twenty years: eight classical dances, two systems of music, three temple styles, and four or five schools of painting. Around them sit perhaps twenty monuments and a handful of names.
The second thing to notice is the shape of the question. It is almost never 'describe' and almost always 'match'. Which state does this dance belong to, which dynasty built this temple, which school made this sculpture. So the unit you should store is not a paragraph about a dance — it is a pair: the form and the place it comes from.
This card set gives the four lists in the order they are usually asked, with the pairings that carry the marks.
1. Which classical dance form of Kerala is known for its elaborate facial make-up, towering headgear and enactment of epic stories, traditionally by male performers?
2. The Lion Capital of Sarnath, adopted as India's national emblem, belongs to which period?
3. The Brihadeeswara temple at Thanjavur, built by Rajaraja I, is an outstanding example of which style of temple architecture?
4. The Gandhara school of sculpture is chiefly known for:
5. Which classical dance shows the strongest Persian and Mughal court influence and is organised into gharanas such as Lucknow and Jaipur?
6. The Natyashastra, the foundational treatise on Indian dance and drama and the source of rasa theory, was composed by:
7. Which monument is the earliest garden tomb built in India and served as the forerunner of the Taj Mahal?
8. Purandara Dasa is regarded as the father of which musical tradition?
