The recognised classical forms
The Sangeet Natak Akademi recognises eight classical dances; the Ministry of Culture also counts Chhau, making nine.
| Dance | Region | One mark to remember it by |
|---|---|---|
| Bharatanatyam | Tamil Nadu | the half-seated araimandi stance and crisp geometry |
| Kathak | North India (Uttar Pradesh) | fast footwork and spins (चक्कर); the one classical form of the north |
| Kathakali | Kerala | a dance-drama with elaborate painted make-up and huge skirts |
| Kuchipudi | Andhra Pradesh | the Tarangam, danced on the rim of a brass plate |
| Odissi | Odisha | the tribhanga — the body bent at neck, waist and knee |
| Manipuri | Manipur | soft, flowing movement and the Ras Lila of Krishna |
| Mohiniyattam | Kerala | the graceful 'dance of the enchantress', in white and gold |
| Sattriya | Assam | created in the Vaishnava monasteries (sattras); recognised in 2000 |
| Chhau | Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal | a martial dance, masked in Purulia and Seraikela |
Two from one state — Kerala gives both Kathakali (vigorous, dramatic) and Mohiniyattam (graceful, lyrical).
The trap: Sattriya of Assam was the last to be recognised, in 2000 — it is easily confused with Manipuri, the other classical form of the north-east.

Bharatanatyam and Kathak
Bharatanatyam
Kathak
The trap: the long central piece of a Bharatanatyam recital is the varnam; the tillana comes at the end — options often reverse their places.

Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Odissi
Kathakali (Kerala)
Kuchipudi (Andhra Pradesh)
Odissi (Odisha)
The trap: the Tarangam on a brass plate belongs to Kuchipudi, not Bharatanatyam — the two southern forms share much, but the plate is Kuchipudi's alone.

Manipuri, Mohiniyattam, Sattriya — and Chhau
Manipuri (Manipur)
Mohiniyattam (Kerala)
Sattriya (Assam)
Chhau (eastern India)
The trap: Manipuri dancers wear no ankle bells and avoid hard footwork — the opposite of Kathak, where the ghungroo is central.
