Distance is the TOTAL path length covered by a moving object (always POSITIVE, a scalar quantity); displacement is the SHORTEST straight-line distance between INITIAL and FINAL positions, WITH direction (a vector quantity) — displacement can be ZERO even when distance traveled is large (e.g., a full round trip back to the start).
