Why Dams and Lakes Are Free Marks
Static geography questions on dams and lakes are the most predictable in any general-awareness section. A paper almost always has one question that gives a dam and asks for its river, or gives a river and asks for its state, or asks which lake is the largest of a type. There is no calculation and no reasoning, only recall, and recall can be organised.
Three things cover nearly everything. First, the dam–river–state triple (Bhakra, Sutlej, Himachal Pradesh). Second, the record holders: the highest, the longest, the oldest. Third, the lake types: freshwater, saltwater, lagoon, crater and floating.
This short gives each in a compact form, with the one-line tricks that separate look-alike answers in the options.
1. The Tehri Dam, the highest dam in India, is built on which river?
2. Hirakud Dam, famous as the longest dam in India, is built on which river?
3. Gobind Sagar is the reservoir of which dam?
4. Which is the largest freshwater lake in India?
5. Which is the largest inland saltwater lake in India?
6. Which lake in India is known for its floating islands called 'phumdis'?
7. Which of the following dam–river pairs is correct?
8. Which river, once called the 'Sorrow of Bengal', was tamed by the Damodar Valley Corporation set up in 1948?
